Cincinnati’s offense left Boston College with a clear split in the storybook: a bruising ground game that piled up 254 yards on 46 carries, and a passing attack that never really got loose. That balance - or lack of it - was a big part of what Scott Satterfield and JC French IV talked through Tuesday morning as the Bearcats turned the page to Western Carolina.
French threw only 14 passes against Boston College, finishing with 77 yards and one touchdown. The real headline from his day came on the ground, where he scored three rushing touchdowns for the first time in his career. It was also the first three-touchdown rushing game by a Bearcats quarterback since Desmond Ridder did it in 2020.
Still, the bigger picture is hard to ignore. Cincinnati may have been able to lean on the run and control the game in that matchup, but that kind of production is a different animal once the schedule stiffens up against Kansas State and beyond.
"I don't think so," Satterfield said about having an issue with low pass volume on Saturday. "I think we were controlling the game.
I think we went into that game, and you're not knowing what they're going to do on defense. They did do some different things.
We were anticipating more man (coverage). We didn't really get that.
We got some bracket coverage with some zone, and I think one of the things we didn't want to do, obviously we didn't want to turn the ball over."
Satterfield also said the staff had some deeper throws in the plan, but the way the game unfolded never really gave those chances a runway.
"Obviously, as we go throughout the season, we're going to have to throw the football," Satterfield expanded. "We all know that.
I think this week will present itself a little bit more. The thing about this week is we got two games to scout, which is awesome."
That’s where Western Carolina comes in. Cincinnati gets the Catamounts in a night game next, and the matchup looks like a prime chance to stretch the field. ESPN’s FPI gives the Bearcats a 97.5% chance to win, and Western Carolina has already allowed 665 passing yards through its first two games.
French sounded eager for that opportunity, and he made it clear he sees it as a chance for more than just his own stat line.
"Absolutely, I think these wide receivers deserved it too," French said about possibly opening things up this week. "It's not just about me showing it; it's about the wide receivers making plays. So I'm super excited for them because they put all the hard work in in the offseason, so they deserve a lot of recognition too, and to be able to make some big plays."
Cincinnati is back on the practice field again this afternoon, with Week 2 prep continuing in the heat.
