JC French IV walked into the Battle for the Victory Bell with a clean interception sheet and left with the biggest win of his UC run.
The Bearcats quarterback delivered a career-best 309 passing yards, threw two touchdown passes, added another score on the ground and helped UC storm back from a 21-point halftime hole to beat Miami 35-31 on Saturday at TQL Stadium. He finished 31-for-43, kept his interception total at zero through three games, and did it while taking three sacks.
"I have so much faith in this offense," French said. "We just did what we were coached to do."
The setting made the performance even more striking. It was French’s first game on natural grass since Sept. 8 of last year, when he threw a pair of touchdown passes for Georgia Southern against USC in the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
That day ended with three sacks and a 59-20 loss. This time, in front of 21,045, he was the one finishing the rally.
Miami quarterback David McComb was plenty sharp too. The redshirt freshman threw for a career-high 334 yards in the loss, going 17-for-28 with a 165.6 quarterback rating. He also ran for a touchdown and finished with three sacks taken, just like French.
But the late moments swung the game UC’s way. Kenny Worthy picked off McComb for his first interception of the year, and the final defensive blow came on a strip-sack by Antwan Peek Jr. that ended with Drew Logan landing on the ball to seal the comeback.
French’s numbers told the story of a steady night under pressure. He completed 72% of his throws and posted a 147.8 quarterback rating. McComb completed 61% and was close behind in efficiency, but French’s command after halftime proved decisive.
"Speaking of not panicking and playing with poise, that's JC French," UC head coach Scott Satterfield said. "He was very calm out there.
We're down and he's just making the play. We asked a lot of him tonight.
The fourth down, first down he got was incredible. He was stopped and he spun off and got a first down.
I thought he played, really, really good."
The game itself had a sharp split. French opened strong, going 8-for-10 for 78 yards in the first quarter, while McComb was 2-for-4 for 44 yards. But Miami got a huge lift from Scoop Smith’s opening kickoff return for a touchdown and then built on it with a second scoring drive to take a 14-7 lead.
McComb kept pushing in the second quarter, hitting several deep throws and finishing a drive with a 6-yard touchdown run. A touchdown pass before halftime stretched Miami’s lead to 28-7 and drew boos from the UC crowd that, as the source put it, made the scene sound like Halloween.
From there, the Bearcats started grinding back. French scored on the ground and then found Cole Tabb for another touchdown in the fourth quarter to cut the deficit to 28-21.
UC then closed with a 14-3 edge in the final period, piling up 166 yards of offense to Miami’s 62 in the fourth quarter alone. In the second half, the Bearcats outgained the RedHawks 280-163.
For French, the outing also came on a bigger stage than most of his previous college reps. Saturday was his 39th time taking the field in college.
For McComb, it was only his third game. A year ago, he was on the sidelines in Lawrence, Kansas, when Miami watched UC rally past Kansas.
On Saturday, he still put up the higher passing total, but French got the win that mattered most.
"He competes his tail off," Miami coach Chuck Martin said. "He's so down on himself right now, that's why he's going to be great."
Miami returns home to face Connecticut on Sept. 26 at Yager Stadium. UC gets another major quarterback test the same day, when Avery Johnson and Kansas State visit Nippert for a 7 p.m. kickoff on ESPN2.
