Corey Kiner’s path to an NFL opening-week role with the New England Patriots has taken another turn, and this one could put the former Cincinnati Bearcats back on the field sooner than expected.
With TreyVeyon Henderson ruled out because of an ankle injury, the Patriots may need to lean on the backs behind him, and Kiner is now in position to be part of that mix. Rhamondre Stevenson sits next in line, with Kiner also in the picture after arriving from Arizona less than two weeks ago.
Kiner already made one splash this preseason. Playing for the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame exhibition game in Canton, he scored the first NFL touchdown of the preseason.
He also said this week that he feels ready for whatever comes next.
"I'm very confident," Kiner told Patriots On SI.com this week. "The coaches and the staff, my teammates put me in a good position to do my job and help the team in any way possible."
The Patriots’ backfield picture does not stop with Stevenson and Kiner. Lan Larison and Hassan Haskins are both on the practice squad as well.
Kiner’s NFL résumé is still short, but he has already picked up experience in multiple stops. He played in four games for Arizona last season and finished with 58 rushing yards on 12 carries, along with two catches for 15 yards. He also saw action against the Bengals, his hometown team, and had one carry for 2 yards.
At Cincinnati, Kiner put together a much bigger body of work. In one season at LSU and three with the Bearcats, he ran for 2,882 yards and 16 touchdowns while adding 32 receptions for 172 yards. He went over 1,000 rushing yards in each of his final two seasons at UC, with 1,047 in 2023 and 1,153 in 2024.
Undrafted, Kiner first went to the 49ers as a free agent. The Patriots are now his fourth team, after previous time with the Vikings and Cardinals before this latest trade.
"I prepare for every game the same way," Kiner told SI.com. "I gotta do my job, and that's all I worry about.
Anything outside of doing my job to help the team is something that's out of my control. So I just don't think about that."

Cincinnati fans will get an early look at a much-anticipated preseason slate this fall, with the Bearcats announcing ticket details for three exhibition games. The Oct. 7 meeting with Ohio State is already on sale, giving supporters a first chance to line up for a matchup that should help set the tone for the season before the games start to count.
Season ticket holders also have dedicated purchase and upgrade windows for the Oct. 17 game against Illinois and the Oct. 27 game against Oakland, with any remaining tickets later opening to the general public.
