Cincinnati’s quarterback room has a new face, and the early read on JC French IV is a promising one.
Scott Satterfield went portal hunting to replace the intangible spark Brendan Sosrby brought to the Bearcats, and French emerged as the answer after a long search through transfer options. The former Georgia Southern starter arrives with a track record that shows both volume and production: over his last two seasons with the Eagles, he threw for 5,760 yards, 37 touchdowns and 19 interceptions while completing 64.7% of his passes. He also helped Georgia Southern reach bowl games in both 2024 and 2025.
French brings some legs to the position, too. Last season he ran for 315 yards and six touchdowns, keeping Cincinnati’s recent trend of using quarterbacks who can hurt defenses on the ground. Sosrby, after all, finished last season with nine rushing touchdowns of his own.
That profile has not gone unnoticed nationally. In Pro Football Sports Network’s latest ranking of every FBS starting quarterback, French checked in at No. 40.

French’s top end has already shown up on the stat sheet. His career-best passing day came in 2024 against Boise State, when he threw for 322 yards in Georgia Southern’s 56-45 season-opening loss.
He won’t be working with a thin receiver group, either. Cincinnati’s wideout room has been rebuilt with transfers, and two of French’s top three targets are newcomers. Malachi Henry and JV Gibson both arrive with different résumés but plenty of production behind them.
Henry posted four 100-yard games last season and finished at Central Arkansas as a first-team All-UAC selection at the FCS level. Gibson comes in from Oklahoma after catching 18 passes for 199 yards in one season with the Sooners.
The one familiar name in the projected starting group is slot receiver Isaiah Johnson. He caught 14 passes for 222 yards and three touchdowns for Cincinnati last season.

The opener against Boston College will offer the first real answer on how far along this group has come, and it comes with a little extra attention on JC French IV as he prepares for his first game at Nippert Stadium.
