Cincinnati is moving into game-week mode with the season opener set for Sept. 5 inside Nippert Stadium, and the latest practice session brought a clearer picture of where the Bearcats stand physically heading into Week 1.
After Tuesday afternoon’s work, head coach Scott Satterfield said the team is in solid shape overall, though the offensive line is still dealing with a few bumps. He said the group is “still beat up a little bit in O-Line,” and added that the staff is waiting on several players to return.
“I think over the next couple of days maybe we can get a couple of these guys back, which will be good, and hopefully by next week, game week, we'll get some more guys back as well,” Satterfield said. He added, “I think other than that, probably it's as good as to be expected at this time of the season so far.
We spent so much time in the offseason on how we were going to plan this out, and how the summer was going to be, and how this camp was going to be with Coach Niko (Palazeti) and Jason Stone and Aaron (Himmler), and really just trying to plan this thing out. And I think we've done a really good job of that, of getting these guys to this point.
Obviously anything can happen any day out here, but I think overall the health is really good.”
The Bearcats’ defense has also been setting the tone in camp, repeatedly pressuring JC French IV into turnover-heavy stretches. Safety MJ Cannon said the unit is aiming for “seven turnovers” per game, whether that comes through interceptions, fumbles, or turnovers on downs. The idea is simple: create extra chances for the offense and keep the pressure rolling on the other side of the ball.
Cincinnati still has a few days of tune-up work left before turning full attention to Boston College next week. The Bearcats enter the opener as a heavy favorite, with ESPN’s Football Power Index giving UC a 76.8% chance to win. Satterfield, receivers Larenzo Fenner and Gio Kontosis, and wide receivers coach Vijay Stingley all spoke after practice.
