The Bengals’ first practice of training camp brought an immediate scare, and it landed on one of the team’s most important young players.
Edge rusher Shemar Stewart went down during an 11-on-11 period with what appeared to be a left knee injury. Trainers got to him quickly, but he couldn’t put weight on the leg and was eventually carted off the field. He did not return.
“During first 11 on 11 session, Shemar Stewart, the Bengals 2025 first-round pick, goes down and hobbles off. Was favoring his left knee,” The Athletic’s Paul Dehner Jr. revealed.
“He went down behind the drill, worked on and eventually tried to put pressure on it and couldn’t. He was just carted off.”
There’s no official word yet on the severity of the injury, but the video from the play doesn’t inspire much confidence. Stewart’s leg bent awkwardly on the sequence, and it appeared to be a hyperextension.
That’s the kind of scene that immediately sends a team into wait-and-see mode, especially with a player Cincinnati is counting on to take a step forward.
Stewart’s rookie year was quiet. He played in just eight games in 2025 and finished with one sack. The Bengals were hoping the 2025 first-round pick would make a second-year jump, and the timing matters because this defense needs help.
Cincinnati’s pass rush was already a problem last season, when the Bengals finished with the seventh-fewest sacks in the NFL. If Stewart is sidelined for any length of time, it would be a serious hit to a defense with plenty of questions already hanging over it.
The Bengals also moved on from Trey Hendrickson this offseason, which leaves even more pressure on the rest of the edge group to produce.
Cincinnati tried to address that area by adding Boye Mafe in free agency and Cashius Howell of Texas A&M in the 2026 NFL Draft. Myles Murphy, who led the team with 5.5 sacks in 2025, is back for a fourth season.
If Stewart misses time, all three of those players will have to shoulder even more of the load.

Tylen Riley's Injury Adds New Question For Cincinnati's Bahamas Trip
The Bearcats trip to the Bahamas has already been pushed back by travel issues, and now there is another wrinkle before the first exhibition game even tips off. Cincinnati will face Victoria on Aug. 4 and Calgary on Aug. 5, with both games set to stream on FloCollege Basketball, giving the staff a first real look at the roster against outside competition after a summer of anticipation.
Tylen Riley will not take part in those games because of a hand injury, leaving the point guard spot without one of the players Cincinnati hoped to evaluate on this trip. There is some optimism he could be available for the fall exhibitions in October, but for now the Bearcats will have to keep sorting through their backcourt plans without him while the rest of the group gets its first game action in a new setting.
