Cincinnati is in the thick of the race for one of the top guards in the class of 2027.
Payton Jones, a 4-star prospect from Beaumont, Texas, trimmed his list to seven schools on Tuesday night, and the Bearcats made the cut. Cincinnati is joined by Baylor, Boston College, Clemson, Houston, Maryland and Oklahoma State.
Jones, a 6-foot-2, 195-pound guard, visited Cincinnati in late June after setting up a trip for early June. That trip appears to have mattered. The Bearcats stayed alive while several other programs that had offered him did not, including Auburn, Missouri, Mississippi State, LSU, Kansas State and SMU.
The numbers explain why so many schools are chasing him. Jones averaged 20.1 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.3 steals per game at Beaumont High School, helping lead the program to a 36-4 record and a run to the Texas Class 5A Division II championship game, where Beaumont fell to Mansfield 52-40.
247 Sports lists Jones with a player rating of 91. He is ranked No. 48 nationally, up from No. 78 in early June, and checks in as the No. 8 combo guard in the class and the No. 4 player in Texas. The source also lists him as the No. 58 overall recruit in 2027.
If Jones ends up in Cincinnati, he would join a crowded guard picture. The Bearcats currently have three guards who would be rostered with him, plus Princeton High School commit Kameron Mercer, who would be part of the same incoming class. Those guards are Trevian Carson, who transferred in from North Dakota State University; Akai Fleming, who transferred in from Georgia Tech; and Elijah Perryman, who followed Jerrod Calhoun from Utah State.
Cincinnati is also still in the mix for two other 2027 guards from the local scene: Lakota West’s Josh Tyson and Winton Woods’ Isaiah Mack-Russel. Both are 4-star recruits.

Across five games, the former Bearcat showed enough two-way promise to fit the kind of modern frontcourt role that teams keep chasing, while several other ex-Cincinnati players also logged minutes for Boston, Toronto and Sacramento.
Dillon Mitchell and Day Day Thomas were on the Celtics roster, with Mitchell putting together the most productive line of the group, and Jalen Celestine and Aziz Bandago both got chances with the Raptors.
