The Bearcats get back under the lights Saturday night, and Western Carolina arrives at Nippert Stadium with enough offense to make this one worth watching.
Cincinnati, fresh off its win over Boston College on Sept. 5, 2026, will host the Catamounts in the school’s “Nipp at Night game” with kickoff set for 7 p.m. on Sept. 12. It will be Western Carolina’s second trip to Nippert Stadium; the first came in 2005, when the Catamounts fell 7-3.
Western Carolina is 1-1 to start the season. The Catamounts opened with a 45-21 win over Eastern Kentucky, then dropped a 28-19 decision to Campbell on Sept.
- Last year, they finished second in the Southern Conference with a 7-5 overall mark and a 6-2 conference record, and they closed the 2025 regular season with a 48-6 win over Virginia Military Institute.
Kerwin Bell is in his sixth season leading the program, and he enters Saturday at 32-26 at Western Carolina. Under Bell, the Catamounts have put together multiple winning seasons, and this group has already shown the kind of passing game that can put pressure on a defense.
That attack starts with third-year quarterback Lex Thomas. Against Eastern Kentucky, he produced 389 total yards and four touchdowns, including 320 passing yards and three scores. Through two games, Thomas has topped 600 passing yards and thrown five touchdowns.
Western Carolina leaned on him again against Campbell. Thomas set a career high with 326 passing yards and added two touchdown throws, while fourth-year wide receiver Jai Boyd made the most of his chances with two catches for 49 yards, both going for touchdowns.
The Catamounts also brought some bite on defense in that Campbell game, picking off three passes. Defensive linemen Caleb Turner-Allen and Fernando Jeanty each had interceptions, and Western Carolina now has four picks in two games after finishing with 12 last season.
If Cincinnati is looking for an area to attack, the ground game stands out. Western Carolina managed just one rushing yard on 18 carries against Campbell, its lowest rushing total under Bell.
Still, the passing game gives WCU a real path to moving the ball. If the Bearcats can contain that aerial attack, Nippert could be set up for another loud night under the lights.
The game is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Nippert Stadium and will stream on ESPN+.
