Chiefs Banking on Backup to Become Franchise Left Tackle in 2025

With Chiefs GM Brett Veach spotlighting Jaylon Moore's potential, the team takes a calculated risk on their new left tackle to strengthen the offensive line for future success.

In a bold move that has the potential to shake up their offensive line, the Kansas City Chiefs have welcomed Jaylon Moore into their ranks as a free agent signing. It's a decision that might seem like a gamble at first glance, but for Chiefs general manager Brett Veach, this was a calculated move grounded in long-term belief.

Addressing the media on Thursday, Veach laid out his thoughts on the team's offseason strategy and their approach heading into the upcoming NFL Draft set for April 24. Among the topics discussed was Moore's addition—a pivotal move with huge implications for protecting star quarterback Patrick Mahomes.

With eyes firmly on Moore as the solution for the left tackle position in the 2025 campaign, the Chiefs see him as a crucial line of defense. Moore, who previously backed up Trent Williams with the San Francisco 49ers, is now on a two-year deal with Kansas City, potentially worth $30 million, with $21 million of that guaranteed. Such numbers underscore the team's faith in Moore and the investment they're making in him.

When Veach was asked why Moore was the choice, he was quick to affirm the team's longstanding admiration for the player, emphasizing their strategy of prioritizing strong offensive and defensive lines. "One thing we've shown is we're going to put a high priority on the offensive line, defensive line," Veach asserted.

"And you start off with Jaylon Moore. I don't think it's a secret we want to get some stability there at the left tackle position."

The general manager acknowledged Moore's limited starting experience, yet he viewed it through a lens of potential and opportunity. "Now, when you consider the fact that he played behind a first-ballot Hall of Fame player in Trent Williams, you can see why [his starts were limited].

But he's athletic. He's a smart kid," Veach explained.

Reflecting on Moore's journey, Veach revealed that the Chiefs had their eyes on him even before the 2021 NFL Draft, where he was eventually picked by the 49ers in the fifth round. It's no secret that the Chiefs have been tracking him for a while, appreciating his growth and potential impact.

"We did a lot of work on him during the pre-draft process years ago. Always had a liking...

I thought he had a game that translates, and credit to him for stepping up last year for those six to seven starts where he did a commendable job."

While Moore’s experience on the field might be scant, Veach is confident in his ability to rise to the challenge and anchor the left tackle position. Looking ahead, sustainability and consistency will be key for Moore as he looks to solidify his role on the line.

"[The goal is] maintaining that level of play throughout the course and the duration of a season. But again, we're super excited to add him and hopefully provide some stability to that left side of the line," Veach concluded.

The Chiefs are clearly banking on Moore to be more than just a short-term fix. If he can live up to the expectations, Kansas City might just find the reliable protector Mahomes needs on his blind side.
