The Chicago White Sox have made a strategic move by optioning right-handed pitcher Jonathan Cannon to Triple-A Charlotte, a decision announced on the team's official social media platform. At 25, Cannon won't be part of the Opening Day roster, but that doesn't diminish his potential impact this season.
During his stint in the Cactus League, Cannon showed promise. Over four games, he posted a 1-0 record with a 4.09 ERA across 11 innings.
He demonstrated his ability to strike out batters, recording 10 Ks against five walks, resulting in a 1.45 WHIP. Manager Will Venable highlighted Cannon’s progress, particularly in pitch count leverage and handling the running game.
However, the rotation is stacked with five established starters ahead of him.
The White Sox are gearing up for their March 26 opener against the Milwaukee Brewers, with Shane Smith already set to take the mound. Joining Smith in the rotation are Sean Burke, Anthony Kay, Davis Martin, and Erick Fedde, forming a solid starting lineup out of camp. Cannon will start the season with Charlotte, where he'll continue to hone his skills and stay ready as a valuable depth option for the organization.
Cannon's journey hasn't been without its challenges. Last season, he faced a tough campaign with a 5.82 ERA over 22 appearances, including 17 starts. Spending time in Triple-A allowed him to refine his mechanics, building on his MLB debut in 2024.
Despite not making the Opening Day roster, Cannon remains a vital part of the White Sox’s long-term plans. With his talent and potential, he could find himself back in Chicago as the season progresses, ready to contribute when the opportunity arises.
