The White Sox made a roster move Monday that opened the door for Tommy Pham, designating Tyler Gilbert for assignment to clear a spot on the 40-man roster. That shuffle also brought Aaron Combs back into focus, especially with the comparison to the deal that sent him to Philadelphia for Gilbert on Jan. 1, 2025.
That trade was the second lefty-relief pickup in 11 days for Chicago, coming right after the club acquired Cam Booser from the Red Sox for Yhoiker Fajardo. And if you’re looking for the return on those moves, Fajardo has been the more productive piece by a wide margin.
He’s finishing his age-19 season in Double-A with a 3.69 ERA, 127 strikeouts, and 33 walks across 97 ⅔ innings. Combs, meanwhile, is in Double-A at age 24 with a 5.03 ERA over 34 innings.
On the farm, Charlotte pulled out a 3-1 win over Gwinnett in 10 innings. Kyle Teel was the difference-maker, going 1-for-5 and tying the game with a homer in the ninth. Rikuu Nishida finished 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout, Ryan Galanie went 1-for-4 and was caught stealing, and Edgar Quero was 0-for-3 with a walk and a strikeout.
The pitching line was solid across the board. Noah Schultz worked 4.2 innings and allowed three hits and one run, though it was unearned, while walking one and striking out one on 44 of 70 pitches for strikes. Chris Murphy threw a clean inning with one hit, one strikeout, and no runs, and Shane Smith added a scoreless frame with one hit, one walk, and one strikeout.
Biloxi and Birmingham played a wild one, with Biloxi falling 8-7. Caleb Bonemer went 0-for-3 but drew two walks and struck out twice.
Anthony DePino went 2-for-5 with a homer and a strikeout, and Colby Shelton matched that exact offensive line except he went deep twice instead of once. Ryan Burrowes was 1-for-4 with a strikeout, and Samuel Zavala drew two more walks in an 0-for-2 night.
Shelton’s first homer was the kind that leaves no doubt.

There was also some scoreboard help for Rocket City, which won and left the Barons two games back. Because the Trash Pandas own the tiebreaker, that gap is effectively three games.
Winston-Salem beat Rome 6-3, and Kyle Lodise did plenty of damage in the loss. He went 2-for-4 with his 20th homer and fourth triple.
George Wolkow also chipped in, going 1-for-4 with a strikeout and pushing his RBI total to 97. Javier Mogollón was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts, Jeral Perez was 0-for-4, and James Taussig and Nick McLain each finished 1-for-4 with two strikeouts.
Blaine Wynk made his High-A debut and logged 2 innings, allowing two hits and one run, with one earned run, one walk, and one strikeout on 22 of 36 pitches for strikes.
The Dash’s win moved them back into a tie for first with Bowling Green. Just as important, they stayed 1½ games ahead of Greenville, which is effectively 2½ because they hold the tiebreaker.
Kannapolis also won, beating Delmarva 6-2.

The White Sox did not need much time to decide Jedixson Paez was not going to be part of their pitching picture this spring. Chicago grabbed the right-hander in the Rule 5 draft, gave him a look in camp, and then moved on quickly after he was tagged for six earned runs in three innings during his spring appearances.
Paez was sent back to the Boston Red Sox organization and assigned to Double-A Portland, which only added another layer to a rough stretch for the 23-year-old.
