White Sox On Verge Of Owning Chicago

The Chicago White Sox's long-awaited postseason series victory over the Houston Astros signals a triumphant resurgence after years of playoff heartbreak.

It took more than two decades, but the White Sox finally did it again.

Chicago followed up a 102-loss season a year ago and a 121-loss season two years ago by sweeping the Astros in the AL Wild Card Series, capped by Wednesday’s 7-3 win in Houston. For a franchise that has spent a long stretch near the bottom of the league, it was a long-awaited return to winning a postseason series.

The last time the White Sox got past a playoff round, they were finishing off a championship run. That 2005 team won 99 games, beat the Red Sox in the ALDS and the Angels in the ALCS, then handled Houston in the World Series.

Like this year’s matchup with the Astros, that title-clinching run ended in a sweep. Chicago wrapped it up with a 1-0 win in Game 4.

Back then, Jermaine Dye, Paul Konerko and Joe Crede led the offense, while Mark Buehrle and Jose Contreras anchored the pitching staff.

Now, 21 years later, the White Sox have finally broken through in the postseason again, and they did it against the same opponent.

Since that 2005 title, Chicago has only reached the playoffs three times. The first return came in 2008, when an 89-win team lost to the Rays in the ALDS. That began a 12-year drought that finally ended in the shortened 2020 season, when the White Sox went 35-25 over 60 games.

They were back again in 2021 after a 93-win season, only to lose to the Astros in the ALDS. After that, the club dropped back to the bottom of the standings before this 2026 breakthrough.

The White Sox’ postseason results since the 2005 World Series tell the story of the stretch they’ve just escaped.

Jerry Reinsdorf Just Framed This White Sox Run Very Differently

Jerry Reinsdorf took a step back after the White Sox knocked off the Astros in the American League Wild Card Series and drew a much broader picture of where this 2026 season sits in the franchises arc. The chairman pointed to the hiring of general manager Chris Getz and the way this young roster has moved from promising to postseason-ready faster than many around the team expected.

Now the White Sox have earned a matchup with the Guardians in the AL Division Series after finishing one game behind them in the American League Central. For a club that has spent recent seasons trying to reset its direction, the run has already changed the conversation, even before the next round begins. [Read more 🡒]

Red Sox Crochet Trade Suddenly Looks Worse After Boston's Early Exit

The White Soxs own postseason run has already given the organization some validation, and so has the return from the Garrett Crochet trade made two years ago. Chicago advanced past the Astros in the AL Wild Card round, and three of the four players it received in that deal played meaningful roles in getting the club there, a reminder that the haul has mattered when it counted most.

Bostons early exit only sharpens the contrast. Crochet had a rough outing in the Red Soxs elimination game against the Yankees, and while Chicago is moving on to face the Guardians in the ALDS, the trade package once viewed through a long-term lens suddenly looks a little more immediate, and a little more favorable, from the White Sox side. White Sox Have A Real Rotation Upgrade Fans Will Want Debated

Starting pitching is shaping up as one of the White Soxs clearest offseason needs, and the early speculation is already pointing across town. Shota Imanaga, the left-hander who has posted a 3.45 ERA over three seasons with the Cubs, has been floated by Bleacher Report as a logical, cost-effective fit for a rotation that could use another dependable arm as the club looks toward the 2027 season.

For a White Sox team trying to stay on the right side of postseason momentum, the appeal is obvious: add pitching depth without overextending the budget. Imanagas name makes sense in that conversation because he checks the boxes the White Sox are likely to value, but for now it remains only a target on paper, not a move that has actually been made.
