The White Sox took another hit to their pitching depth Tuesday, putting reliever Huascar Brazoban on the 15-day injured list with a left lat strain and leaving them without him for at least the next two weeks.
Brazoban’s issue showed up in Monday’s 11-2 loss to the Texas Rangers, when he threw one inning and allowed one run on one hit. Chicago had just acquired the right-hander from the New York Mets on Aug. 3, but his first stretch with the club has been rocky: a 6.30 ERA in 10 appearances and seven earned runs allowed in 10 innings.
Across the full season, Brazoban has a 3.16 ERA and 1.13 WHIP over 62.2 innings. His earliest possible return is Sept.
To cover the roster spot, the White Sox recalled right-hander Jonathan Cannon from Triple-A Charlotte. Cannon has a 5-6 record and a 5.18 ERA in 17 starts and five relief appearances for Charlotte this season. He has already appeared once for Chicago, but that outing was a rough one - on April 12 against the Kansas City Royals, he walked three batters and allowed one run without recording an out.
The injury only adds to a rough run for the White Sox’s trade-deadline arms. Luis Castillo has posted a 5.89 ERA with Chicago and has made it through five innings only once in four starts since arriving. Jose Urquidy, brought in via a minor-league trade before the deadline, has a 5.68 ERA with the team.
Chicago also made a separate roster move Tuesday, placing Andrew Benintendi on the bereavement/family medical emergency list and recalling Rikuu Nishida from Charlotte. Benintendi, 32, is batting .244 with 13 home runs and 65 RBIs in 116 games this season.

Torontos place in the playoff race makes the whole thing a moving target, though, which is why this sits more in the realm of possibility than certainty right now. If the Blue Jays stay in the hunt, they have little reason to make things easy on anyone else, and the White Sox would have to wait and see whether Bieber ever actually becomes available in the way that would make a claim realistic.
