John Schneider didn’t sugarcoat it after the Blue Jays were blanked 3-0 by the Chicago White Sox on Sunday. Toronto’s offense has been stuck in neutral, and the manager made it clear the club can’t keep waiting for things to click.
“We've got to start winning. That's just the bottom line,” Schneider said following the series loss, according to MLB.com's Keegan Matheson.
“It doesn't matter how you do it. If you win 1-0 or 10-9, you've got to start winning.”
That message landed after another quiet day at the plate. The Blue Jays managed just four hits in the finale, and every one of them was a single. Over the three-game set with Chicago, Toronto scored only five runs total, with four of those coming in Friday’s 12-4 loss.
Schneider described the team’s offensive struggles as “frustrating” and said the group looked “a little flat” on Sunday.
“We've got to turn it around in a hurry,” the manager said. “I think there were some at-bats where we were playing defense as opposed to playing offense.”
The numbers around the slump are hard to ignore. Toronto entered Sunday ranked 27th in runs scored, and the loss left the defending American League champions in last place in the AL East at 46-53. They’re four games out of a playoff spot after the defeat.
The Blue Jays reportedly want to be buyers ahead of the Aug. 3 trade deadline, but that plan could change if the team doesn’t start producing soon.
