The Marlins added another arm to their pitching depth on Wednesday, claiming right-hander Wikelman González off waivers from the White Sox and sending him to Triple-A Jacksonville.
Miami had a 40-man roster opening, so the move came without any corresponding transaction. Chicago had designated González for assignment a couple of days ago.
González, 24, came to the White Sox from the Red Sox in the 2024 Garrett Crochet trade. He reached the majors for the first time last season and worked 20 1/3 innings out of Chicago’s bullpen, posting a 2.66 earned runs per nine mark. The strikeouts were there - he punched out 28.7% of the batters he faced - but the walks were a problem, with a 13.8% walk rate.
This year, Chicago has mostly kept him at Triple-A, where he has logged 24 2/3 innings and a 6.57 ERA. The surface number looks rough, but the underlying strikeout-and-walk profile has stayed pretty close to what he showed last year.
His walk rate is 12.6%, still on the high side, and his 28.6% strikeout rate remains a real strength. The ERA has also taken a hit from a .387 batting average on balls in play and a 65.4% strand rate.
Even after getting squeezed off the White Sox roster, González makes sense as a waiver claim for Miami. The Marlins had the roster room, and they can keep him in Triple-A this season.
He’ll be out of options next year, but he still has less than a year of service time and could remain a low-cost piece for years if the control improves. If not, he could wind up on the roster fringe once that final option year is gone.
