The White Sox and the Charlotte Knights are experiencing contrasting starts to their seasons. While the White Sox have stumbled out of the gate with three tough losses, the Knights have been riding high, notching three wins against the formidable Tampa Bay Rays organization.
A key factor in the Knights' success has been the contributions from the White Sox's top pitching prospects. However, it’s an underrated infield prospect, William Bergolla Jr., who has truly shined offensively. Ranked 11th in the White Sox system by MLB Pipeline, Bergolla Jr. has been a revelation.
Acquired during the White Sox's 2024 trade deadline fire sale, Bergolla Jr. came over from the Phillies in exchange for reliever Tanner Banks. Since joining the organization, Bergolla Jr. has done nothing but impress.
In his first full season with the Birmingham Barons at just 20 years old, he hit .286 with a .342 OBP, adding 19 doubles, two triples, and an impressive 37 walks against only 26 strikeouts. Throw in 40 stolen bases, and you’ve got a player with a dynamic skill set.
Bergolla Jr. carried this momentum into Spring Training, where he continued to turn heads. In 37 plate appearances, he hit .314 with a .351 OBP, including two doubles, four RBIs, and two stolen bases, while maintaining his excellent bat-to-ball skills with just two strikeouts.
As the minor league season kicks off, Bergolla Jr. has been a standout for the Knights. In just three games, he’s arguably been their top hitter.
With 11 plate appearances, he’s gone 7 for 9, drawn a walk, and struck out only once. His performance includes two doubles and three RBIs, highlighted by a clutch game-winning single in the 11th inning on Saturday night.
With his sizzling start and a stellar 2025 season behind him, Bergolla Jr. could be knocking on the door of a major league call-up. The White Sox, despite scoring seven runs in their latest game, managed only three in the previous two combined. If their offensive struggles persist, they might look to Bergolla Jr. to inject some life into their lineup.
The challenge, however, lies in the White Sox's current depth of infielders, both in the minors and majors. But if Bergolla Jr. continues to rake as he has, the team will need to find a way to get him at-bats at the major league level.
While Tanner Banks has been a reliable arm for the Phillies, the White Sox might just emerge as the real winners of this trade. If Bergolla Jr. fulfills his potential, he could become a top-of-the-order force in Chicago for years to come.
