White Sox Are Trusting A Rookie With Their Biggest ALDS Gamble

Rookie pitcher Hagen Smith is set to lead the White Sox in their ALDS opener against the Guardians, but strategic decisions loom large for manager Will Venable.

The Chicago White Sox have their Game 1 starter lined up for the ALDS, and the choice points right back to the arm they trusted in the Wild Card round.

Multiple reports say rookie Hagen Smith is expected to start Saturday in Cleveland. That would come just four days after he got the ball in the opener against the Houston Astros, when Chicago opted to go bullpen-heavy and Smith delivered 3.0 scoreless innings to set the tone for a 6-3 win.

That outing was only the second time Smith has worked 3.0 innings in his major league career, but he made it look clean and efficient. He needed just 38 pitches, landed 28 for strikes, allowed two hits and didn’t issue a walk.

Given the White Sox’s current options, Smith is the easiest starter to trust right now. The sample is still small, but he has been one of the organization’s top prospects for years, and this is another chance for him to show he can be part of the next step forward.

The big question is how long Will Venable will let him roll. Smith could be used more like a traditional opener, or Chicago could ask him to handle a similar workload to the one he had against Houston. Either way, pushing him much further than that would carry some risk.

Davis Martin is another name to watch, though he has not yet appeared in the postseason. Some expected him to be the next option, especially after Sean Burke and Anthony Kay handled the Wild Card clincher, but Martin has struggled badly in the second half. His most recent start against the Rockies ended after the first inning, with three hits and three runs allowed.

Venable could still use Martin in a bulk role if he wants to spark something from the veteran right-hander. But with the White Sox bullpen having been one of the best in baseball, leaning on that group may be Chicago’s best path to stealing Game 1.

Cleveland will counter with Parker Messick in Game 1 and Gavin Williams in Game 2. The Guardians’ rotation has been one of the strongest in the sport, with a combined 3.77 ERA.

The full ALDS schedule is now set, and the series begins in Cleveland on Saturday afternoon. Chicago gets a built-in breather after that, with a day off before both Game 2 and Game 3.

Game 3 is the one that jumps off the page for White Sox fans: their first playoff game back at Rate Field since 2021. Chicago beat the Astros 12-6 that day, though it was their lone victory in that five-game set.

October 8 - vs.

October 10 - @ Cleveland (4:00 p.m. CT)**

The White Sox would need to take one of the first three games to force that second matchup at Rate Field. The ALDS is a best-of-five, with a possible Game 5 back in Cleveland on October 10.

Chicago has already announced the return of its “Blackout” games, with fans encouraged to wear black to every home playoff game. For now, October 7 is the only guaranteed postseason date at Rate Field, and the price tag reflects the buzz around it.

SeatGeek listed the get-in price for Game 3 at $259 as of publication, with that amount tied to row 19 in section 548. Seats in the 100s are running well above $400, and most are listed at more than $500.

White Sox Linked To A Dream Ace Fans Wont Fully Believe

The White Sox spent this season trying to show they could move from rebuilding to relevant, and that naturally puts the focus on the kind of arm that can change a franchises direction. ESPNs Kiley McDaniel, citing MLB insiders, has floated Chicago as a potential sleeper in the race for free agent Tarik Skubal, a name that would instantly transform the conversation around the club if it ever got serious.

There is obvious logic to the fit. Chicago needs help in the starting rotation, and the recent postseason success gives the front office a more believable pitch than it might have had a year ago. The question, of course, is whether ownership would ever be willing to chase a deal that could climb into a range this steep, which is why the idea feels intriguing for White Sox fans and hard to fully picture at the same time. White Sox Playoff Run Just Delivered A Chicago School Incredible Surprise

Jim "Mattress Mack" McIngvales friendly playoff wager ended up turning into a big day for a Chicago school. After the Houston Astros fell to the White Sox in the American League Wild Card Series, the bet kicked in and brought an unexpected reward for St. Gabriels Catholic School, which sits near Rate Field and now gets to be part of the postseason atmosphere.

All 190 students, along with some chaperones, will attend Game 3 of the American League Division Series between the White Sox and Guardians. The principal delivered the news to the students, and the reaction was exactly what you would expect from a group suddenly handed a trip to a playoff game - a rare, memorable surprise tied directly to a White Sox run that has already reached beyond the ballpark. Grant Taylor Just Gave The White Sox A Huge October Edge

The Wild Card round has already done plenty to sharpen the edges of October, and for Chicago, it served up a reminder that one big performance can change the feel of a postseason series in a hurry. With three of the four Wild Card matchups ending in sweeps, the opening act of the 2026 MLB postseason was light on drama in some places and heavy on statement-making in others, setting up Division Series conversations around which players most influenced the first real test of the month.

For the White Sox, Grant Taylor emerged as the kind of pitcher who can tilt a short series and give a club a genuine edge moving forward. The Wild Card round does not hand out an official MVP award, but Taylors work against Houston was strong enough to put him in that speculative spotlight, and for a Chicago team looking ahead to the next challenge, it is the sort of October momentum every contender wants to carry.
