Sam Antonacci Stuns as White Sox Hint at His New Role

Sam Antonacci's journey from a fifth-round draft pick to a versatile prospect could reshape the White Sox lineup as he explores new roles in the outfield.

Sam Antonacci is making waves in the White Sox organization, evolving from an overlooked fifth-round pick in 2024 to a promising prospect with a bright future. His impressive rise through the farm system has left the White Sox pondering not if he’ll make it to the majors, but where he’ll fit once he arrives. Today, the team might have dropped a hint by slotting him into left field for the first time.

Antonacci’s defensive versatility has always been a standout feature. Since being drafted, he’s showcased his skills across all four infield positions. However, stepping into the outfield presents a new challenge, as he’s never played there in college or the pros.

White Sox Infield Depth

The decision to test Antonacci in the outfield is understandable. With Miguel Vargas, Colson Montgomery, and Chase Meidroth projected as the starting infield trio for 2026, the White Sox are brimming with infield talent.

This depth is further bolstered by top prospects like Caleb Bonemer and Billy Carlson, along with emerging talents such as Kyle Lodise, William Bergolla Jr., Javier Mogollon, and Jeral Perez. The infield competition could intensify if they draft UCLA shortstop Roch Cholowsky, a top prospect in the 2026 MLB draft.

With so much talent vying for limited spots, some players will inevitably need to switch positions. Antonacci appears to be embracing this possibility, as he shared with MLB.com's Scott Merkin.

“They tell me to grab an outfield glove, I’ll go out there. I always like to say I never got drafted to just be a shortstop or second baseman for the White Sox.

I got drafted to help them win. If that’s in the outfield, I’m more than happy to do it,” Antonacci stated.

Outfield Opportunities

The outfield presents a more open path for Antonacci. While top prospect Braden Montgomery and trade acquisition Luisangel Acuña are expected to secure spots, the long-term outfield picture is still wide open. Transitioning to left field could fast-track Antonacci’s journey to Chicago, offering him the chance for consistent playing time.

White Sox fans might recall past experiments with infielders moving to the outfield, like Andrew Vaughn and Gavin Sheets, but Antonacci brings a different dynamic. His experience as a middle infielder suggests he has the athleticism needed for left field, even if he doesn’t possess elite speed or arm strength.

A Promising Future

For Sam Antonacci, reaching the majors seems more like a matter of timing. Finding the right position for him, considering the team’s strengths, is key. If his transition to the outfield is successful, it could be a win-win for both Antonacci and the White Sox.
