Kyle Teel's Injury Shakes Up White Sox Plans for the Season

White Sox face potential lineup shake-up as key injuries threaten their season opener strategy.

As spring training unfolds, the White Sox have mostly dodged the dreaded injury bug-until now. Kyle Teel's grade 2 hamstring strain during a World Baseball Classic game against the United States means he'll be sidelined for 4-6 weeks.

Just as the team was absorbing that blow, Brooks Baldwin's situation emerged. Baldwin, who hasn't played since March 6th, is now dealing with inflammation in his right elbow.

Manager Will Venable shed some light on Baldwin's condition, explaining, "He’s got some elbow soreness from throwing to bases. It’s a day-to-day situation and will be evaluated further." It seems Baldwin has faced similar issues before, raising concerns about a recurring problem.

Baldwin’s Impact on the White Sox

Baldwin's versatility on the field has been a key asset for the White Sox. Last season, he played six different positions, including all three outfield spots, and improved at the plate with a .253/.310/.459 slash line and seven home runs in the second half. Losing him, even temporarily, would be a setback for a team eager to make strides in 2026.

Opening Day Roster Considerations

With Opening Day around the corner, Baldwin's readiness is in question. If he can't go, the White Sox will need to adjust their outfield lineup.

Luisangel Acuña and Austin Hays are likely to feature prominently, with Andrew Benintendi potentially seeing time in left field. Baldwin's absence could open the door for another player to join the roster.

Who Could Step Up?

Jarred Kelenic might be the primary beneficiary if Baldwin is sidelined. The former top prospect has impressed this spring and could seize the opportunity.

Everson Pereira, who’s also in the mix, might find a clearer path to the roster despite dealing with his own oblique issue earlier. Derek Hill, known for his defensive prowess, is another candidate to consider.

Looking Ahead

For now, Baldwin's status is "day-to-day," with further updates expected soon. While there's no indication of a long-term issue, keeping an eye on his progress will be crucial as Opening Day approaches. The White Sox will be hoping for a quick recovery to maintain their momentum heading into the season.
