Willson Contreras has gone from a polarizing ex-Cubs favorite to a player who looks settled in Boston.
That’s a pretty sharp turn for a guy who left Chicago and then made himself no favors with Cubs fans after heading straight to the St. Louis Cardinals.
His time there didn’t end with any playoff appearances, and last offseason he was traded again, this time to the Red Sox. The early stretch in Boston has had its share of noise, including benches-clearing incidents, but the production has been impossible to ignore.
At the All-Star break, Contreras is putting together the best season of his career. Through 364 plate appearances, he owns an OPS of .921 and has already hit 20 home runs. He made the American League All-Star team and also took part in the Home Run Derby.
And when it comes to what happens next, Contreras doesn’t sound like a player looking for another move. In a conversation with Mass Live’s Chris Cotillo, he said he wouldn’t be willing to waive his no-trade clause. The read from that exchange is that he wants to stay in Boston and finish his career there.
“I mean, I like Boston,” Contreras told the Red Sox insider. “I don’t want to just leave because of the situation.
I like challenges, I like the team, I love my guys and I love my teammates. They’re great persons, great people.
That’s what I appreciate the most. Every day they show up to the clubhouse, they’re willing to listen and they’re willing to learn.
That’s why I went ahead and said something."
That stance matters because Boston looked for months like a team headed for sell mode at the deadline. Contreras’ deal runs through the 2027 season and includes a club option for 2028, which would have made him a natural name to circulate in trade chatter.
But the Red Sox have changed the picture. They’ve suddenly become one of the hottest teams in baseball and are back in the race, which changes the calculus around Contreras and likely around other names, too.
For the Cubs, that could matter as well. Boston pitchers Aroldis Chapman and Sonny Gray would be obvious trade targets, but with the Red Sox surging, they’re probably not available now.
