Venezuela Stuns Italy With Epic Rally to Reach World Baseball Classic Final

Venezuela makes history by reaching their first-ever World Baseball Classic final, overcoming Italy with a decisive seventh-inning rally.

What a game we witnessed today, folks! Venezuela emerged victorious over Italy with a 4-2 win, putting an end to Italy’s captivating journey in the World Baseball Classic.

Italy jumped to an early lead, capitalizing on a shaky start from Venezuela's pitcher, Keider Montero. Astros outfielder Zach Dezenzo got things rolling with a single, followed by Montero walking three consecutive batters-Jac Caglianone, Andrew Fischer, and J.J.

D’Orazio-bringing in the first run. Dante Nori added another with a fielder’s choice, putting Italy ahead 2-0 by the second inning.

On the other side, Aaron Nola was a wall for Italy, keeping the Venezuelan bats quiet through three innings. He had some defensive help when Jakob Marsee made a spectacular catch in center field, doubling up Maikel Garcia at first base. It was a déjà vu moment for Marsee, having pulled off a similar play earlier in the tournament.

Italy had a golden opportunity to extend their lead in the sixth, loading the bases with two outs. However, Brewers pitcher Angel Zerpa came in clutch, striking out Antonacci to defuse the situation.

Italy’s manager, Francisco Cervelli, executed a strategic masterstroke by leveraging his top pitchers, Nola and Michael Lorenzen, to maintain their lead. Nola allowed just one run across four innings, and Lorenzen kept Venezuela scoreless through the fifth and sixth.

But the tide turned in the seventh inning. Lorenzen issued a walk to Gleyber Torres, which seemed harmless after he struck out the next two batters.

Yet, with two outs, Lorenzen surrendered four consecutive singles, starting with Jackson Chourio and capped by Ronald Acuña Jr., who tied the game with an infield hit.

Cervelli brought in Kyle Nicolas after a decisive single from Arraez, but the damage was done. Venezuela's bullpen held firm, and Daniel Palencia sealed the deal by striking out Antonacci for the save.

This victory marks Venezuela's first trip to the World Baseball Classic finals-a historic achievement. Italy, despite the loss, can hold their heads high after a remarkable run that brought baseball fever to new fans back home.
