The Miami Marlins are going to be without Owen Caissie for at least the next stretch, and the timing could hardly be worse.
On Thursday, the club announced that Caissie was placed on the 10-day injured list with a right calf strain. He had left last night’s game after feeling tightness in his right leg, and now the Marlins will have to move forward without one of their starting outfielders until at least after the All-Star break.
That absence comes while Miami is rolling. Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors noted how quickly the Marlins have climbed into the thick of things: “Caissie and several other Miami players have gotten hot lately and propelled the team into contender status,” Darragh McDonald of MLB Trade Rumors wrote.
“On June 7th, the Marlins were 31-35 and 14 games back of Atlanta in the National League East. Now they are 51-42 and only three games back.”
To fill the roster spot, Christina De Nicola of MLB.com reported that the Marlins recalled outfielder Rece Hinds from Triple-A Jacksonville.
Caissie, a former top prospect with the Chicago Cubs, has put together a solid first season in Miami across 80 games. He’s hitting .239/.297/.459 with 12 home runs, 50 RBIs and a .755 OPS.
There’s also been plenty of swing-and-miss in his game. The right fielder has struck out in 39.0% of his plate appearances this season.
The 24-year-old was acquired from the Cubs over the offseason in the trade that sent right-hander Edward Cabrera to Chicago.

Cubs Get Burned Again As Bullpen Misery Meets Brutal Call
The Cubs had already spent most of the night trying to recover from another bullpen wobble when the game turned into a late-inning grind against Baltimore. Tyler Ferguson and Ryan Rolison let the Orioles seize control in the eighth, a frustrating familiar script for a relief group that has been asked to hold too many tight games together on the fly.
Then came the ninth-inning sequence that left Chicago with even less to show for its effort. Nico Hoerner was ruled out on a close play at second after the Cubs thought they had a chance to keep the rally moving, and the kind of call that can hang around long after the final out only added to the sting of a loss that again pointed back to the same issue: this bullpen still needs help, and the front office knows it has to find some before the deadline. Cubs Injury Update Just Raised The Stakes For A Shaky Bullpen
Craig Counsells latest injury update only deepened the sense that the Cubs are still piecing together their relief picture as the summer grind intensifies. Justin Steele is moving toward a mound program in early August, which at least gives the club a clearer timeline on his recovery, while Phil Maton has already begun a minor-league rehab assignment after his stint on the injured list. For a bullpen that has been asked to carry a heavy load, every bit of progress matters, even if it does not solve the larger problem right away.
Daniel Palencias timeline adds another layer of uncertainty, with his throwing progression not expected to resume until after the All-Star break. That leaves Chicago balancing short-term innings with an eye on what might be available later in the month, and it helps explain why bullpen help is expected to remain a live topic as the trade deadline approaches.
