Cubs vs. D-backs: A Sizzling Spring Training Showdown
The Phoenix sun wasn't the only thing blazing on Wednesday as the Cubs and Diamondbacks faced off in a Spring Training slugfest. With temperatures soaring to a record-breaking 101 degrees, the heat seemed to ignite the bats on both sides, culminating in a 16-8 victory for the D-backs.
Early Fireworks and D-backs' Comeback
The D-backs struck first, capitalizing on a defensive miscue. Corbin Carroll, fresh off a recovery from a broken hamate bone, reached base on an error and quickly made his presence felt by scoring on Geraldo Perdomo's single. Perdomo, returning from a stint at the World Baseball Classic, wasted no time making an impact.
The Cubs responded with a flurry of runs in the third inning. Matt Shaw, shaking off his earlier error, kickstarted the rally with a double.
Miguel Amaya's single brought Shaw home, setting the stage for Jefferson Rojas. Rojas, showcasing his power potential, launched a grand slam, his third homer of the spring, propelling the Cubs into the lead.
D-backs Flip the Script
The Diamondbacks roared back in their half of the third. Alek Thomas, another WBC returnee, crushed a two-run homer, narrowing the gap. A combination of walks, a wild pitch, and a clutch double turned the tide, giving Arizona a 7-5 advantage.
Things unraveled for Cubs pitcher Edward Cabrera in the fourth. After re-entering the game, he surrendered a homer to Carroll, sparking a D-backs onslaught that extended their lead to 14-5 by the inning's end.
Pitching Relief and Late Cubs Homers
Gavin Hollowell provided a rare moment of calm for the Cubs, retiring the D-backs in order in the fifth. His strong spring performance could earn him a spot in the Opening Day bullpen.
In the eighth, Kevin Alcántara and Jonathon Long tried to ignite a Cubs comeback with back-to-back homers, their first of the spring. Alcántara's blast was particularly impressive, showcasing his power potential.
Looking Ahead
Brady Counsell, son of Cubs manager Craig Counsell, also made his mark for the D-backs, going 1-for-2 and scoring twice.
The Cubs will take a breather on Thursday before splitting their squad for two games on Friday, both rescheduled to evening starts due to another scorching forecast. Matthew Boyd will take the mound against the Reds at Sloan Park, while Jameson Taillon faces the A's at Hohokam Stadium.
As Spring Training heats up, both teams are looking to fine-tune their rosters and strategies, readying themselves for the challenges of the regular season.
