Daniel Palencia Stuns Cubs Fans with Game-Changing WBC Performance

Rising star Daniel Palencia's World Baseball Classic heroics have reshaped the Cubs' bullpen strategy for the upcoming season.

Daniel Palencia's WBC Brilliance Reshapes Cubs' Opening Day Strategy

The Chicago Cubs faced a significant decision this offseason: should they bring in a seasoned closer to bolster their bullpen? They considered names like Ryan Helsley and Pete Fairbanks, but ultimately opted for a strategy focused on depth. Enter Daniel Palencia, who manager Craig Counsell quickly named as the closer.

Palencia's potential was evident, but after losing the closer role late in the 2025 season, there was speculation the Cubs might seek a trade deadline addition akin to Aroldis Chapman's impact in 2016.

However, Palencia's performance in the 2026 World Baseball Classic may have put those concerns to rest. After helping Venezuela clinch the title with a 3-2 victory over Team USA, his role as the Cubs' closer seems more secure than ever.

In the semi-final against Italy, Palencia closed the game with precision. The Cubs had requested his use only in crucial ninth-inning situations, and when called upon in the championship game, he delivered. Palencia struck out two of the three batters he faced, showcasing his electric form.

Throughout the World Baseball Classic, Palencia was dominant, pitching five scoreless innings and consistently hitting triple digits with his fastball. His stellar performance might have erased any doubts about Counsell's decision to name him the closer early in spring training.

Looking back at last season, Palencia showed flashes of brilliance with a 2.91 ERA across 54 appearances, striking out over 28% of hitters. However, his performance dipped in the latter part of the season, possibly due to injury, as his ERA rose to 5.40.

Despite these challenges, Palencia proved his worth in the playoffs, often being the go-to reliever for Counsell. This trust indicates that Palencia is set to be a cornerstone of the Cubs' bullpen moving forward.

If his World Baseball Classic form is any indication, the Cubs might just have one of the league's top closers on their hands.
