Colin Rea delivered a standout performance on the mound Saturday night in Peoria, Arizona, as the Cubs cruised to a 7-1 victory over the Mariners. Rea, showcasing the consistency that Cubs fans have come to appreciate, pitched four efficient innings.
With 77 pitches thrown-50 of them strikes-Rea continues to prove his value in a long relief and spot starter role. The Cubs have a reliable arm in Rea, and that's a comforting thought for the season ahead.
The Cubs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard. In the top of the first, Moisés Ballesteros doubled with one out, displaying his knack for hitting, even if he doesn't fit the traditional mold of a ballplayer.
Miguel Amaya followed up with a single to bring Ballesteros home, setting the tone early. Amaya's potential is undeniable, and if he stays healthy, he could be in for a breakout year.
The Cubs extended their lead in the sixth inning, thanks to a two-run single by Ben Cowles. Michael Conforto, fresh off the news that he's made the team, contributed with two hits. There's an argument to be made for Conforto starting in right field over Seiya Suzuki, and his performance certainly adds fuel to that discussion.
Jonathon Long, making the most of his opportunities this spring, also chipped in with two hits. The bullpen kept the Mariners at bay, with Collin Snider and Corbin Martin each delivering scoreless innings.
Minor leaguer Evan Taylor impressed with two scoreless frames of his own. As the game wound down, some of the Cubs' minor leaguers added three more runs in the eighth, with Cowles picking up his third RBI of the game.
Looking ahead, the Cubs will face the Brewers at Sloan Park on Sunday afternoon. Cade Horton is set to start for the Cubs, with Chad Patrick taking the mound for Milwaukee.
