Cubs Roster Takes Shape as Key Player Secures Unexpected Spot

Spring training cuts help shape the Cubs' roster, as key players emerge and last-minute decisions loom ahead of Opening Day.

The Chicago Cubs' Opening Day roster is beginning to take shape, and it's bringing some exciting developments for fans. Over the weekend, Moises Ballesteros and veteran Michael Conforto got the nod, confirming their spots on the team. Sunday's roster cuts have further clarified the remaining positions, with utility infield prospect Jonathon Long being reassigned to minor-league camp.

There was buzz about Long potentially making the Opening Day roster, but it looks like former St. Louis Cardinal Dylan Carlson has edged him out for that final bench spot.

The Cubs are also dealing with Seiya Suzuki starting the season on the injured list, which means some early roster adjustments are in order. Chas McCormick is still in camp, but an injury seems to have sidelined his Opening Day prospects.

Veteran Owen Miller is another intriguing option for the Cubs. Familiar with manager Craig Counsell from their days with the Brewers, Miller could add valuable infield depth and even cover corner outfield spots. However, adding him would require a corresponding move on the 40-man roster, as would Conforto’s inclusion.

The Cubs can place Suzuki on the IL starting Wednesday, so the final bench decision might not come until then. Whoever claims that spot might only be with the team temporarily, depending on Suzuki's recovery.

In the bullpen, Ben Brown appears to have secured the final spot. Despite Corbin Martin and Collin Snider entering spring training as frontrunners, inconsistent performances have opened the door for Brown.

Martin, who is still refining his mechanics, could be a bullpen option later in the season if things fall into place. For now, Brown's impressive spring showing seems to have earned him a place on the Opening Day roster.
