As spring training unfolds in Mesa, the Chicago Cubs are buzzing with anticipation, and one name on everyone’s lips is Jefferson Rojas. The 20-year-old infield prospect has been turning heads with his impressive play, making him a standout story amid the excitement of the World Baseball Classic, where Pete Crow-Armstrong is shining for Team USA.
Rojas, ranked as MLB Pipeline's #5 Cubs prospect, is showing the kind of potential that could see him climb even higher. His power at the plate is undeniable, and while his overall slash line might not be perfect, the raw talent is evident.
Cubs manager Craig Counsell has been vocal about Rojas’ growth, noting, “Just being able to see Jefferson two years ago, and where we’re at right now - wow. We’ve got a good offensive player here that’s going to impact the baseball and do some damage.
He’s going to be a dangerous hitter.”
The Cubs have high hopes for Rojas, envisioning him as big-league ready by the end of 2026. Last year, he reached Double-A, an impressive feat considering he was nearly four years younger than the average player at that level.
Despite facing older, more experienced pitchers, Rojas is showing significant development at the plate. His stats from last season may not jump off the page (.164/.279/.205 in 172 plate appearances), but the Cubs are encouraged by his progress and potential.
Counsell believes this could be a pivotal year for Rojas, with the possibility of him knocking on the door of the majors by season’s end. “The goal for that would be at the end of the year he’s ready to play in the major leagues,” Counsell remarked. “He’s 20, so that’s an ambitious goal right there, but he’s having a great camp, and the way he’s kind of matured in the batter’s box over the last two years, getting spring training looks from him is really fun to see.”
As the Cubs continue to shape their roster, Rojas’ journey is one to watch. His blend of youth, talent, and determination could make him a key piece in the Cubs’ future, and fans have every reason to be excited about what lies ahead for this promising young infielder.
