The Cubs are expected to make a roster move Friday that brings James Triantos to Chicago for the game against the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the ripple effect may be bigger than the call-up itself. ESPN’s Jesse Rogers reported that Kevin Alcantara will be optioned back to Triple-A Iowa, and while there was some early trade-deadline buzz around the timing, Rogers said there is no trade in the works.
That move also shuts down any worry that Pedro Ramirez was hurt, since Alcantara being sent down clears that possibility off the table.
For Alcantara, this looks a lot like the end of the road with the Cubs. He has bounced between the majors and the minors since the end of the 2024 season, but the organization has not given him much runway, and the signs point to a team that has cooled on the former top prospect.
The tools have always been easy to see in the minors: outfield defense, speed, power, and the kind of ceiling that makes a prospect stand out. The problem is that none of it has really shown up in the big leagues.
In 43 career plate appearances, Alcantara has posted a .475 OPS with one stolen base. All nine of his hits have been singles, and he has also had multiple mistakes on the bases. That’s the kind of line that quickly trims a player’s leash, and it helps explain why Craig Counsell moved fast to cut back his playing time.
The Athletic’s Sahadev Sharma also singled out Alcantara as the one Cubs player who should be in another uniform after the August 3 deadline, which fits the direction this situation seems to be heading.
There is still some long-term uncertainty in the Cubs’ outfield picture, with Ian Happ and Seiya Suzuki both coming off the books after this season. But there’s been no sign that Alcantara is being lined up as the answer for either spot. Matt Shaw looks like the more obvious option for one of the corner-outfield jobs, and if the Cubs can’t bring back Happ or Suzuki, the likelier path is another veteran stopgap while the club waits for someone like Ethan Conrad or Josiah Hartshorn.
At this point, Alcantara appears to be a player who needs a team willing to give him a real stretch of everyday chances. That doesn’t look like it’s going to happen in Chicago.
