Andre Dawson, a name that resonates with baseball fans, especially those in Chicago, is approaching a significant milestone. It's been nearly 30 years since he last graced the MLB diamond, yet the affection from Cubs fans has only deepened over time.
Now, there's a fresh twist in his storied legacy. The National Baseball Hall of Fame has agreed to re-cast his plaque without a team logo, fulfilling a long-standing wish of Dawson's.
Why is this significant for Dawson and the Cubs faithful? Since his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2010, his plaque has sported a Montreal Expos cap.
This decision was made because, at the time, plaques without team logos weren't an option. Dawson's tenure in Montreal was indeed remarkable-he spent over half of his 21-year career there, earning Rookie of the Year honors, three All-Star selections, three Silver Slugger Awards, six Gold Gloves, and twice finishing as the MVP runner-up.
Yet, Dawson's heart has always been tethered to Chicago. In 2023, he requested a change to feature a Cubs hat on his plaque. While the Hall of Fame didn't fully grant this request, allowing for a logo-less plaque is a step that brings peace to the 1987 National League MVP.
“I always felt that I was a Cub in the Hall of Fame. I just had the ‘M’ on the cap,” Dawson shared.
“That’s where my heart was, even though I was six years a Cub. It means everything.
It means I finally had the opportunity to provide my input.”
During his six seasons with the Cubs, Dawson became an icon, capturing the MVP award in his debut year with the team. His tenure in Chicago was marked by five consecutive All-Star appearances, another Gold Glove, and a Silver Slugger Award. The connection he forged with the fans, especially the Bleacher Bums in right field, was something special.
“It was just a love affair with the fans in right field,” Dawson reminisced. “Andre’s Army.
That’s what is most enjoyable about the game. That’s what you play the game for - for the fans.
And the way they embraced me, it goes beyond what my wildest expectations would’ve been.”
Dawson’s legacy is a testament to the powerful bond between a player and his fans, transcending the stats and accolades. It's about the heart and the shared love for the game.
