The Cubs’ search for pitching at the deadline keeps circling back to New York, and this time the name tied to Chicago’s bullpen is Luke Weaver.
That fits a familiar pattern. The Cubs and Mets already hooked up earlier this season in the David Peterson deal, and there’s still a sense the two clubs could line up again before the deadline. Chicago’s pitching needs remain obvious in both the rotation and the bullpen, and while the rotation has drawn plenty of attention, the relief mix is just as much of a problem area.
Phil Maton likely won’t be used in innings that matter the rest of the way, and Daniel Palencia’s timeline remains unclear. The Cubs do have some internal help on the horizon, with Hoby Milner expected back around the start of August and Ben Brown and Justin Steele potentially returning in September. Even so, the front office still appears to have a deadline bullpen addition on the to-do list.
With the deadline now pushed back to August 3, the rumor mill has moved slowly. Plenty has been written about what the Cubs need, but not many actual names have been attached to them. Patrick Mooney of The Athletic may have changed that by pointing toward Weaver as a possible target.
Weaver was already on the Cubs’ radar in the offseason, when Chicago showed interest in veteran relievers. Mooney noted that big bullpen swings have not exactly been a hallmark of Jed Hoyer’s tenure, but Weaver could be the kind of exception that makes sense at this point.
The catch is cost. Weaver signed a two-year deal with the Mets, so Chicago would be paying for the extra year of control. That would likely mean giving up at least one prospect of real value, maybe more.
Still, Weaver looks like a more manageable target than the top-end bullpen names like Mason Miller or Josh Hader. He has been excellent for New York this season, posting a 1.98 ERA in 39 appearances while striking out more than 27% of the hitters he has faced. He could walk into Chicago and be treated as the closer right away, or, if Palencia still owns that role, he has already shown he can handle high-leverage innings.
And the contract matters beyond this season. Weaver is under control through 2027, which gives the Cubs something they’d be missing in a bullpen that is likely headed for more turnover anyway. If Chicago is going to reshape that group, Weaver would be a meaningful place to start.
