The Milwaukee Brewers are heading into Wrigley Field with a chance to tighten their grip on the National League Central and keep building toward the top seed in the National League.
They open a four-game road series against the Chicago Cubs on Monday, and the timing could hardly be better for Milwaukee. The Brewers are 7-3 over their last 10 games, while the Cubs have stumbled to a 3-7 mark over the same stretch. That gap shows up in the standings, too: Milwaukee owns an eight-game lead in the division with 25 games left.
The Brewers and Cubs still have seven meetings left in the regular season, including four this week. The final three come later, from Sep. 7 through Sep.

For now, Milwaukee is in complete control.

Their magic number to win the National League Central is 18. And their magic number to lock down the No. 1 seed in the National League sits at 23.
A sweep in Chicago would make the path even steeper for the Cubs, dropping the division magic number by eight. That kind of week would leave Milwaukee in a commanding position with little left for Chicago to chase.
At this point, the division race looks close to decided. Milwaukee is chasing its fourth straight division title, and the only real way that slips away is through a historic collapse. Unless the Cubs reel off something like a 10-game winning streak and the Brewers somehow lose 10 straight, the Central is going to stay in Milwaukee.
That’s what makes this series so important. A few wins against their biggest rival could all but shut the door.
