The Tampa Bay Rays are shaping up as one of the teams to watch as the MLB trade deadline approaches, and the buzz is only getting louder around Detroit Tigers ace Tarik Skubal.
Tampa Bay enters the All-Star break with a three-game cushion over the New York Yankees in the American League East, but even with that success, the roster still has spots that could use help. The rotation has been strong, yet the need for more starting pitching is real, and the Rays could aim straight at the top of the market to address it.
Jon Heyman of the New York Post is the latest MLB insider to connect Tampa Bay to Skubal, the two-time defending AL Cy Young Award winner. The Rays are not alone in the chase, either. The Atlanta Braves and Chicago Cubs have also been mentioned as contenders for the left-hander.
That still may not be the full field. The Los Angeles Dodgers are always a threat to jump in with their deep farm system and willingness to spend. The Philadelphia Phillies could be involved too, along with the New York Yankees.
Still, Tampa Bay keeps coming up for a reason. The franchise is in its first year under new ownership, and there’s clearly a desire to make that opening season count with a contender. A move at the deadline would fit that goal, and this front office has never acted like it’s afraid to swing big when the fit is right.
The Rays have already shown a willingness to chase star power. They pursued New York Yankees slugger Aaron Jude and Dodgers first baseman Freddie Freeman in free agency when they believed the timing made sense.
Before Shohei Ohtani reached free agency and signed with Los Angeles, Tampa Bay was also prepared to include Junior Caminero and Carson Williams in a trade package to try to land him from the Los Angeles Angels, though that effort was turned away.
If the Rays were willing to part with those two prospects for Ohtani, it stands to reason they would consider another major prospect package for Skubal if they believe he can push them closer to a World Series.
And the need is there. Shane McClanahan, pitching for the first time since August 2023, is already at 86 innings. Griffin Jax and Ian Seymour, both converted from the bullpen in midseason, have thrown 70 and 64.2 innings, respectively.
With Steven Matz and Jesse Scholtens on the injured list, starting depth has become one of the biggest items on Tampa Bay’s deadline checklist. A reliable innings-eater would help, but an ace like Skubal would be the kind of addition that changes the conversation entirely.
