Sixers Sign Rising Wing To Fill Key Roster Spot

The Sixers make a calculated roster move by adding 2022 first-round pick Dalen Terry on a two-way deal amid a whirlwind trade week.

The Philadelphia 76ers are adding some wing depth with a familiar name from the 2022 draft class. Dalen Terry, the 23-year-old former first-round pick, has officially signed a two-way contract with the Sixers, the team announced Monday.

Terry’s journey to Philly has been a whirlwind. Over the course of just a few days during the trade deadline frenzy, he was moved not once, but twice.

First, the Bulls dealt him to the Knicks in a deal involving Guerschon Yabusele and some cash. Then, the Knicks flipped him to the Pelicans alongside two second-round picks and more cash in exchange for Jose Alvarado.

New Orleans didn’t hang onto him long, waiving him on Friday and sending him into free agency. Now, he lands in Philadelphia with a chance to reset and contribute on a team looking to stay competitive in the East.

Despite being the 18th overall pick in 2022, Terry never quite carved out a consistent role in Chicago. Over three-and-a-half seasons with the Bulls, he saw limited minutes-just 11.1 per game across 204 appearances-and averaged 3.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.2 assists.

It’s a modest stat line, but it doesn’t tell the full story. Terry’s defensive energy and positional versatility have always intrigued teams, and the Sixers are banking on that upside in a low-risk, high-reward move.

Because NBA service time isn’t officially logged until June 30, Terry remains eligible for a two-way deal despite being in his fourth season. That gives the Sixers a window to evaluate him without committing a full roster spot. His contract runs through the end of the season, after which he’ll hit unrestricted free agency.

This move comes after Philadelphia promoted Dominick Barlow to a standard roster spot, opening up one of their two-way slots. Terry now joins Jabari Walker and MarJon Beauchamp as the Sixers’ trio of two-way players. Notably, the Sixers have leaned toward using these slots on more experienced players rather than raw rookies-a strategy that could pay dividends in the playoff push, especially with injuries mounting and minutes becoming more precious.

Terry will be eligible to suit up for up to 18 regular season games. However, since the Sixers have no “under-15” games left on their schedule, they’ll need to keep a full 15-man standard roster in place to activate him or Beauchamp moving forward. Walker, the third two-way player, has already hit his 50-game limit.

For Terry, this is a fresh start-and for the Sixers, it’s a calculated bet on a young wing with untapped potential. If he can bring energy on defense and find his rhythm offensively, he could be more than just a depth piece down the stretch.
