In a recent episode of the Mind The Game podcast, LeBron James shared his thoughts on the Chicago Bulls' trade involving Jaden Ivey and Kevin Huerter with the Pistons. LeBron sees this as a "win-win" for both teams, particularly highlighting Ivey's shooting prowess last season before his unfortunate injury. For Ivey, a former No. 5 pick, this move to Chicago might just be the opportunity to take on more responsibility.
The Bulls, who've been stuck in mediocrity for some time, made some head-scratching moves at the trade deadline. But snagging a young talent like Ivey could be a savvy gamble by the front office.
LeBron praised the Bulls for their decision to bring in Ivey. Before his injury, Ivey was putting up impressive numbers-averaging 17.6 points per game with a shooting percentage of 46% from the field and 40.9% from beyond the arc.
However, his season was derailed by a leg injury and subsequent knee surgery in October, which delayed his return to the court. This year, before the trade, Ivey managed 8.2 points per game on 45% shooting from the field and 37.2% from three in 33 games with the Pistons.
Understandably, Ivey wasn't quite back to his pre-injury form. But with Chicago, there's hope that a fresh start and increased role could help him regain his stride. In his first four games with the Bulls, he averaged 29 minutes per game, a significant increase from his time in Detroit.
LeBron noted that Ivey's new role with the Bulls was apparent from the get-go, as he attempted 12 shots in his debut. This increased responsibility not only benefits Ivey but also positions the Bulls well, especially with Ivey entering restricted free agency this summer.
Chicago acquired Ivey at a bargain, and with Huerter's initial struggles in Detroit, the trade already seems worthwhile. The ideal scenario for the Bulls is that Ivey evolves into a key player as they embark on their long-awaited rebuilding phase.
It's not often the Bulls' front office makes moves that resonate with fans, but this trade for Ivey might just be the exception. And having LeBron's endorsement only adds to the potential upside.
