Jalen Smith’s night ended early on Wednesday at Madison Square Garden, and the Bulls are now waiting to learn how serious the latest setback might be.
Smith, who entered the matchup against the defending champion New York Knicks listed as probable because of a left finger sprain, left the game with a left hand injury and will not return, according to K.C. Johnson of the Chicago Sports Network. The injury comes at a rough time for Chicago, which has been leaning on Smith in the frontcourt while veteran center Nic Claxton deals with a hamstring issue in preseason.
With Claxton sidelined, Smith has been starting and giving the Bulls needed minutes in the paint. He has also been one of their more productive bigs, averaging 12.1 points and 8.6 rebounds per game while supplying versatility and athleticism around the rim.
This is not the first time Smith has dealt with the left finger issue. He was set to play against the Boston Celtics last Friday before suffering that injury earlier in the week. Smith has been with the Bulls since the 2024-25 season, and in 2024 he signed a 3-year, $27,000,000 contract that runs through this summer, when he becomes an unrestricted free agent.
There has also been some noise around his future. Rumors have suggested Chicago could explore moving Smith before the February trade deadline, and that talk picked up when the Warriors reportedly called the Bulls to ask about acquiring him, per Elias Schuster of Sports Illustrated.
As the story was updated, Chicago trailed New York 111-70 in the waning moments of the third quarter. Smith finished with seven minutes played.

Bulls Waste Caleb Wilsons Big Night As Early Slide Gets Worse
Caleb Wilson gave the Bulls a needed spark with 24 points, but it was not nearly enough to slow a Philadelphia team that has opened the season looking every bit like a contender. The 76ers rolled to a 126-107 win at Xfinity Mobile Arena, moving to 7-1 while Chicago dropped to 1-6 and absorbed its fifth straight loss.
Philadelphia took control in the third quarter, when the game tilted hard in a seven-minute stretch that left the Bulls chasing the rest of the night. Tyrese Maxey powered the offense with 26 points and 11 assists, Jaylen Brown added 25 points and 11 rebounds, and LeBron James chipped in 15 points and nine assists as Chicagos early slide kept getting worse. Caleb Wilson Gives Bulls Fans A Reason To Feel Different Right Now
Caleb Wilson is already giving Bulls fans something to latch onto in a season that has started rough, and now he has a little off-court spotlight to go with it. The rookie has appeared in his first professional commercial for New Balance, a spot that shows him knocking down jump shots while talking about his approach to basketball, a nice reminder that there is at least one young player in Chicago who looks comfortable carrying a bigger stage.
On the floor, Wilson has backed up the attention with production, averaging 21.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while shooting 43.2 percent from the field. The Bulls are just 1-6 as they get ready to face the Knicks, so every sign of progress matters, and Wilsons early run has been one of the few things around the team that feels worth building around right now. Bulls May Finally Get Frontcourt Help At A Crucial Time
The Bulls could be getting a timely boost in the frontcourt as they prepare to face the Knicks, with Nic Claxton inching closer to his season debut after missing the first seven games with a left hamstring strain. Chicago has been short on answers early, so any help in the middle would arrive at an important moment, especially with the team trying to steady itself against a New York group coming off a win and looking to keep building.
The injury report still leaves plenty of uncertainty on both sides, though, and the matchup could look different by tipoff. New York is monitoring Josh Hart because of right ankle soreness, while the Bulls are waiting to see whether Claxton is ready to return after his recent upgrade on Tuesday. Even with both teams carrying questionable and probable tags, Chicago is hoping this is the kind of night where a key reinforcement finally becomes available. [Read more 🡒]
