Bulls Suddenly Have A Frontcourt Problem Against Boston

With Jalen Smith's status uncertain for the Bulls' matchup against the Celtics, Chicago's lineup faces potential challenges amidst injuries and a tough season start.

The Bulls head to Boston on Friday with Jalen Smith’s status still up in the air. Smith is listed as questionable on the NBA injury report because of a left finger sprain, leaving his availability against the Celtics uncertain.

Chicago is trying to steady itself after a rough start. The Bulls dropped Monday’s meeting with Boston 134-99, then fell to the New York Knicks 133-127, leaving them at 1-4. Smith has been part of the frontcourt mix while covering at center for Nic Claxton, who is sidelined with a hamstring injury.

Even with the injury tag, Smith has given Chicago useful production early in the season. He’s averaging 13.4 points and 8.2 rebounds, and he has reached double figures in four of the first five games. He opened with 15 points in the season opener against the Toronto Raptors, a 135-92 loss, then followed with a double-double of 14 points and 13 rebounds in a 132-125 win over the Milwaukee Bucks.

In Chicago’s home opener, Smith posted 14 points in a 124-120 loss to the Washington Wizards. Against Boston on Monday, he was held to 7 points and 6 rebounds before bouncing back with 17 points and 11 rebounds against the Knicks on Wednesday.

Smith has provided the Bulls with extra frontcourt depth and a steady scoring and rebounding presence, even if he’s not a natural starter. He is in his junior year with Chicago.

The injury report also lists Tobe Awaka as questionable with a left ankle sprain, Patrick Williams as questionable with a right adductor sprain, and Claxton as out with a left hamstring strain.

Bulls Could Benefit From An NBA Injury Problem Much Sooner Than Expected

The early weeks of the 2026-27 NBA season have already been rough on a number of title hopefuls, and that kind of injury wave tends to ripple well beyond the teams directly affected. For the Bulls, it has created a potentially useful opening around Norman Powell, whose scoring punch and ability to help right away make him the sort of veteran contenders keep on speed dial when their depth gets tested.

Powell has long looked like a player who could draw interest if Chicago decided to move him, but the timing may be shifting faster than expected. With several teams suddenly dealing with key absences, the market for a ready-made scorer can change in a hurry, and that could put the Bulls in position to explore a deal before the season settles into its usual rhythm. Bulls Were Exposed Again By Boston In A Familiar Way

Bostons latest visit to the Bulls brought a familiar script, and it was one Chicago never managed to change. The Celtics rolled to a 125-110 win in Emirates Cup group play, with Jayson Tatum steering the offense and the Bulls again looking out of sorts on both ends of the floor. Chicago never found a steady rhythm, and the issues that have haunted it in tough matchups showed up early and often.

The bigger concern was how quickly the game tilted away from the Bulls, who were forced to chase from the opening stretch after Boston came out with pace and purpose. Shooting, defense and turnovers all worked against Chicago, and the margin only grew as the Celtics kept pressure on every possession. By the time the Bulls tried to settle in, the game had already started to slip into the kind of one-sided loss that leaves a team searching for answers. [Read more 🡒]

Patrick Williams Still Has One Big Bulls Question Hanging Over Him

Patrick Williams early-season role remains one of the quieter questions around the Bulls as they settle in under new head coach Tiago Splitter. The forward is working back from a quad injury and has not played this fall, even as camp has offered a first look at how Splitter wants the group to function. Williams has said he feels good about his relationship with the new coach, and the tone around him has been optimistic.

Splitter has also been careful not to close the door on anything, saying Williams has been performing well in training camp and will have chances to play as the season moves along. For a Bulls team still sorting out its rotation, that leaves Williams in a familiar spot: healthy enough to be in the conversation, but still waiting for the first real opportunity to turn camp progress into game minutes.
