The Bulls may be walking into Boston with their front line stretched thin.
Jalen Smith is officially questionable for the matchup with the Celtics after showing left finger trouble during Wednesday night’s close loss to the Knicks. The starting center was seen shaking out his hand in that game, and Chicago confirmed the injury on its report.
The encouraging sign: Smith went through shootaround this morning, according to K.C. Johnson of CHSN.
Whether that gets him the green light for tip-off is still up in the air.
That matters because Smith has been one of Chicago’s steadiest pieces early on. He’s putting up 13.4 points and 8.4 rebounds as a starter, mixing in hustle plays, a few timely threes, and better work on the defensive end. He’s not known as a classic rim protector, but he’s brought some needed toughness inside and turned in what may have been his best defensive outing against the Knicks.
Even so, the Celtics have given him problems before. In his last game against Boston, Smith managed just 7 points in 20 minutes, and the matchup with Mitchell Robinson is clearly a difficult one. Still, Chicago would much rather have him available than not, especially with the center rotation already in rough shape.
Nic Claxton is still out, and Tobe Awaka is questionable again because of an ankle injury. That leaves open the possibility that Zach Collins is the lone available center.
Collins has played in only three of the team’s five games so far and hasn’t logged more than 12 minutes in any of them. He also had a rough showing against Boston earlier this week, finishing 1-for-5 and a minus-20.
There is at least one positive note on the injury front. Patrick Williams is expected to be available in Boston after missing the last few games with an adductor strain and entering the day as questionable.
Williams told Johnson he will play, though that doesn’t guarantee he sees the floor. Tiago Splitter has not used him yet even when he’s been healthy, and with several long wings on the roster, the former No. 4 overall pick looks like the odd man out for Chicago.

Bulls Could Benefit From An NBA Injury Problem Much Sooner Than Expected
The early weeks of the 2026-27 NBA season have already been rough on a number of title hopefuls, and that kind of injury wave tends to ripple well beyond the teams directly affected. For the Bulls, it has created a potentially useful opening around Norman Powell, whose scoring punch and ability to help right away make him the sort of veteran contenders keep on speed dial when their depth gets tested.
Powell has long looked like a player who could draw interest if Chicago decided to move him, but the timing may be shifting faster than expected. With several teams suddenly dealing with key absences, the market for a ready-made scorer can change in a hurry, and that could put the Bulls in position to explore a deal before the season settles into its usual rhythm. Bulls Were Exposed Again By Boston In A Familiar Way
Bostons latest visit to the Bulls brought a familiar script, and it was one Chicago never managed to change. The Celtics rolled to a 125-110 win in Emirates Cup group play, with Jayson Tatum steering the offense and the Bulls again looking out of sorts on both ends of the floor. Chicago never found a steady rhythm, and the issues that have haunted it in tough matchups showed up early and often.
The bigger concern was how quickly the game tilted away from the Bulls, who were forced to chase from the opening stretch after Boston came out with pace and purpose. Shooting, defense and turnovers all worked against Chicago, and the margin only grew as the Celtics kept pressure on every possession. By the time the Bulls tried to settle in, the game had already started to slip into the kind of one-sided loss that leaves a team searching for answers. [Read more 🡒]
Patrick Williams Still Has One Big Bulls Question Hanging Over Him
Patrick Williams early-season role remains one of the quieter questions around the Bulls as they settle in under new head coach Tiago Splitter. The forward is working back from a quad injury and has not played this fall, even as camp has offered a first look at how Splitter wants the group to function. Williams has said he feels good about his relationship with the new coach, and the tone around him has been optimistic.
Splitter has also been careful not to close the door on anything, saying Williams has been performing well in training camp and will have chances to play as the season moves along. For a Bulls team still sorting out its rotation, that leaves Williams in a familiar spot: healthy enough to be in the conversation, but still waiting for the first real opportunity to turn camp progress into game minutes.
