Bulls Suddenly Face A Big Frontcourt Question With Nic Claxton Out

The Chicago Bulls face uncertainty as they start their preseason without Nic Claxton, with his return date post-hamstring injury remaining unclear.

The Chicago Bulls are heading into their first preseason action without Nic Claxton, and the timing could hardly be worse for a team trying to build something new.

Head coach Tiago Splitter said after Monday’s training camp practice that Claxton has a hamstring injury and will be re-evaluated in two weeks. That puts the veteran center on a watch list for the start of the season, with the organization’s opener against the Toronto Raptors coming just two days after that checkup.

Even if the re-evaluation goes well, that does not automatically mean Claxton will be ready to roll. He’ll have missed valuable training camp and preseason work by then, and the Bulls may not be eager to rush him back that quickly.

The likely next man up for Wednesday’s preseason opener at the United Center is Jalen Smith. Zach Collins is back in the mix as well, but he arrived at camp while working his way back from a quad injury.

The Bulls have been easing the 28-year-old along, even though the issue does not seem major. Tobe Awaka and Orlando Robinson are also on the camp roster, with Awaka on a two-way deal and coming off plenty of center minutes for Chicago in Summer League.

The injury is a setback because Claxton was brought in from the Nets this summer to matter right away. His rim protection is a major part of why Splitter has started leaning into a more aggressive front-line defense, and neither Smith nor Collins offers that same kind of impact.

There’s also the offensive side of the equation. Claxton was expected to give Josh Giddey a dangerous pick-and-roll partner, which matters for a Bulls offense still finding its shape early in the season.

The team is hoping the absence won’t stretch long. Claxton is set to be re-evaluated on Oct. 19, and if he’s cleared to resume basketball activity then, the Bulls’ home opener on Oct. 24 against the Washington Wizards could be a more realistic target. Hamstring issues can linger, especially for an athletic big, so his movement will matter just as much as the calendar.

For now, Chicago has to keep moving without him. And for a team trying to use camp and preseason to sharpen its chemistry, losing Claxton from those reps is a real blow.

Matas Buzelis Sees A Different Bulls Team Taking Shape

Matas Buzelis opened training camp sounding like a young player who has already felt the difference between a team searching for answers and one trying to build something sturdier. After a season in which Chicago was sorting through change, the second-year forward said the tone around the organization has shifted, with more intensity and a clearer sense of purpose as the Bulls move through an overhaul and into a new phase of the rebuild.

Buzelis also spoke with the patience of someone focused on the long game, stressing that his own approach is to keep improving every day and help wherever he can. For a roster trying to establish itself, that matters as much as any single skill point. The real test now is whether the early signs of order and accountability can hold once the games start to pile up. [Read more 🡒]

Michael Jordan Weighed In On A Bulls Reality Fans Know Too Well

Michael Jordans latest remarks offered a familiar kind of reminder for Bulls fans: the game has changed around the franchise, but the standard he set has not. Speaking at the SBC Summit in Lisbon, Jordan said modern sports betting and the nonstop statistical noise of todays NBA would not have altered how he approached basketball. His emphasis, as ever, was on winning, studying opponents and staying locked in on the next challenge rather than getting pulled into everything swirling around the game.

Jordan also touched on how different the current landscape would feel for players now, with social media adding a layer of scrutiny his era never had to deal with. For a franchise still measured against his shadow, the comments hit on a reality Chicago knows well, even if the details of how he would navigate todays betting-heavy environment remain his to spell out another time. Bulls Preseason Opener Already Puts Their Rebuild Under Pressure

The Bulls are barely into preseason, and the mood around the opener against the Suns already feels more about survival than evaluation. Before the first practice even got going, Zach Collins was hurt, while Caleb Wilson and Matas Buzelis are expected to get the first look in the starting group as Chicago begins sorting through a roster that still has more questions than answers.

Chicago also moved quickly to address its depth, bringing in Jordan Hawkins to fill the last roster spot. The early injuries only sharpen the pressure on a team trying to make its rebuild look like progress, and the next few days will say plenty about how much the Bulls can learn before the games start counting for real.
