Bulls Still Waiting On A Frontcourt Piece They Really Need

Bulls' head coach Tiago Splitter tempers expectations as Nic Claxton's hamstring injury casts doubt on his preseason return.

The Bulls’ preseason run has moved forward without Nic Claxton, and there still isn’t a clear sign he’ll be ready before the games count.

Chicago closes out the preseason Friday against the Minnesota Timberwolves, but Claxton remains sidelined with the hamstring injury he suffered in practice. The team initially put him on a 2-week evaluation, and head coach Tiago Splitter said before the game that Claxton was still the exception among Chicago’s injured players, according to Will Gottlieb of CHGO Bulls.

“3 of those players are on the upswing, except for Claxton,” Splitter said.

Claxton wasn’t the only Bull unavailable. Zach Collins, Issac Okoro, and Tobe Awaka also sat out. Collins is dealing with a soft-tissue injury to his toe, Okoro has a quadriceps contusion, and Awaka is out with knee inflammation.

While Claxton’s return remains uncertain, Jalen Smith has handled the center minutes in his absence and has already posted double-figure scoring nights against the Phoenix Suns and Milwaukee Bucks. If Collins gets back sooner, Chicago would at least regain another option as a backup big in the second unit.

The Bulls brought Claxton in a trade with the Brooklyn Nets in July, betting on the kind of interior presence they’ve been missing. He gives them size, strength, and rim protection, and he can also stretch the floor, push in transition, and operate in the pick-and-roll.

Last season with Brooklyn, Claxton averaged 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.7 assists across 69 games while shooting 57.1% from the field.

Caleb Wilson Is Forcing A Bulls Question Tiago Splitter Can't Ignore

The Bulls closed their preseason with a 133-116 win over Minnesota, and Caleb Wilson gave them one more reminder that his rise is becoming part of the conversation in Chicago. The rookie was active from the start, scoring efficiently, helping on the glass and making plays as a passer and defender in a game that showcased why the organization is already taking a long look at what he can become.

Tiago Splitter praised Wilsons development afterward and made clear how central the young forward is to the teams future, but he also flagged the bigger challenge sitting ahead of this group. Wilson can supply energy and production in a hurry, yet the Bulls still have to build an offense that doesnt lean too heavily on one newcomer, even one with star potential. [Read more 🡒]

Derrick Rose Just Gave Bulls Fans A Powerful Reminder

The Bulls had more than a preseason game to think about at the United Center, where Derrick Rose made an appearance and reminded everyone how much he still means to this franchise. The former MVP and Chicago native has stayed connected to the organization, and his presence around the team carried the kind of weight that only comes from years of shared history and a city that never really stopped claiming him as one of its own.

Rose also spent time around training and crossed paths with Caleb Wilson and Dailyn Swain, another sign that his bond with the Bulls is still active, not just sentimental. With Chicago now turning its attention toward the regular season opener against the Toronto Raptors on October 21, moments like this add a little extra texture to camp, especially when they come from a player whose connection to the team still resonates this strongly. Bulls Just Created A Roster Question Fans Will Be Watching

After wrapping up the preseason, the Bulls moved on from four players as they trimmed the roster, parting ways with Brandon Boston Jr., Drew Peterson, Jalen Bridges and Orlando Robinson. Each had gotten at least three exhibition appearances to make a case, and Robinson was the most productive of the group, but Chicago still had to make the hard call as the regular season approached.

What stands out now is the way the roster is being managed from here. The Bulls are carrying 14 players on guaranteed contracts and are planning to leave the 15th spot open for flexibility, a move that keeps the front offices options open as the season unfolds. For the players waived, the next stop could be the Windy City Bulls in the G League, which would keep them in the organization while Chicago watches how the final spot shapes up. [Read more 🡒]
