Leonard Miller has spent the preseason making his case in a hurry, and new Bulls coach Tiago Splitter seems to have noticed.
According to Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun-Times, Miller is currently sitting ahead of Noa Essengue and Patrick Williams in the rotation picture. That’s a notable turn for the 33rd overall pick in the 2023 draft, who barely saw the floor in his two-and-a-half seasons with Minnesota before getting a much longer runway with Chicago after the Ayo Dosunmu deal. He finished last season as a regular part of Billy Donovan’s rotation, and he’s carried that momentum into the exhibition slate.
Through four preseason games, the 6’10” Canadian has put up 17.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.2 steals in just 19.4 minutes per night while shooting .651/.600/.714. That production has helped him carve out a bigger role as the Bulls sort through frontcourt injuries and lineup combinations.
Those injuries have also created opportunities for Jalen Smith, who has played more than expected while Nic Claxton, Zach Collins, Isaac Okoro and Tobe Awaka have been sidelined. Julia Poe of The Chicago Tribune notes that Smith looks in line to open the regular season as the starting center, with Miller backing him up in Wednesday’s one-sided win over Milwaukee.
Smith’s value goes beyond filling minutes. Splitter said the 26-year-old big man should still have a place in the rotation even when Claxton and Collins are healthy again, pointing to his floor-spacing ability. Smith has hit 36.7% of his three-pointers over the last three seasons, and opposing defenses respect him enough on the perimeter that he opens things up for teammates going downhill.
“ What I see from [Smith] is he’s a guy that can stretch the floor,” Splitter said. “ Having a five that can stretch the floor and create space is tremendous, so you’ve got to try to use that as an advantage, and we go from there.”
Essengue, meanwhile, is trying to turn a summer lesson into preseason progress. Splitter had benched him during Summer League for what he saw as a lack of physicality and effort, but Cowley reports the French forward has made a point of attacking those areas during camp. Splitter has been encouraged by what he’s seen, and Essengue says he’s embracing the fight for minutes.
“ I’m a competitor; I love to compete for everything, on the court, off the court, I love competing,” Essengue said. “ Yeah, I was a first-round pick, [Williams] was No. 4 [overall in 2020], Lenny is in the last year of his contract, so we’re all playing for something.”
There’s also belief building around the second unit. Splitter and backup point guard Tre Jones both sound convinced the Bulls have the kind of bench group that can matter once the games count. Jones made it clear the standard has to be high, and that the group’s identity starts with pace, sharing the ball and getting stops.
“ I think our second unit can be really good,” Jones said. “ If we want to be really good as a team our second unit needs to be that good and hold ourselves to that standard.
The energy that the second unit brings will be key for us. We’re really unselfish in that group, we share the ball.
We really don’t care who scores as long as we score as a unit, that’s all that matters. We try to build off our defense.
We’ve got the length and athleticism so try to use that to our advantage and get stops, feed off of that.”
Miller is in the final year of his rookie contract and will make $2.4MM this season. Smith is also on an expiring deal and is set to earn $9.4MM in 2026/27 before hitting free agency next summer.

Bulls Just Showed The Early Identity Chicago Fans Have Been Waiting For
A preseason win can be easy to dismiss, especially when the opponent is missing several regulars, but the Bulls still gave Chicago something tangible to look at in their 125-104 rout of the Bucks. The ball moved well, the shots came fast and the offense had the kind of pop that coaches and fans alike have been waiting to see, a reminder that even in October there are clues worth filing away for the regular season.
Matas Buzelis was one of the biggest reasons the night felt different, finishing with 19 points and providing a jolt in the middle of the game when the Bulls needed one. Chicago wrapped up the preseason at 2-2 and now turns to Minnesota next, with the real test arriving when the regular season opens on Oct. 21. [Read more 🡒]
Bulls Win Still Left One Concern Fans Shouldn't Ignore
Chicagos 125-104 win over Milwaukee had the look of a team making the most of an opponents problems. The Bulls were sharp enough to turn Bucks mistakes into easy offense, and they spread the production around with Josh Giddey, Noa Essengue, Norman Powell and Jalen Smith all making their presence felt in a convincing result that should have boosted the mood around the group.
Still, the night also served as a reminder that one strong showing does not erase every concern. The Bulls benefited from a Bucks team missing key pieces and coughing the ball up far too often, which is the kind of edge that can swing a game quickly in October but is harder to count on once the schedule tightens and healthier rosters are in the way. Caleb Wilson Is Giving Bulls Fans A Real Reason To Watch This Reset
Caleb Wilson arrives in Chicago with the sort of draft pedigree that can briefly soften the sting of a reset. The No. 4 pick is heading into his first season with the Bulls after backing up the buzz in Summer League and carrying that momentum into a solid preseason, giving the fan base something tangible to follow while the bigger picture around the roster takes shape.
The early national conversation around Wilson has already been split, which only adds to the intrigue. Some outlets see him as one of the leagues most promising rookies and a legitimate Rookie of the Year type, while others have been far less enthusiastic, leaving his stock somewhere between obvious upside and unresolved debate. For Bulls fans, that makes his debut season feel like more than a development project. It is also a measuring stick for how quickly this new chapter can start to look worth the wait. [Read more 🡒]
