Bulls Rookie Dailyn Swain Suddenly Has A Real Chance To Climb

Rising star Dailyn Swain finds himself in a pivotal position, as Bulls coach Tiago Splitter advises him to embrace his unique playing style amid increased preseason responsibilities.

The Bulls may have spent most of the preseason spotlight on Caleb Wilson, the No. 4 pick, but Dailyn Swain is making sure he gets noticed too.

Swain, selected No. 15 out of Texas, put together a sharp showing in Wednesday’s preseason opener against the Phoenix Suns. He scored 10 points, handed out 6 assists, and did it efficiently, going 3-for-3 from the field and 4-for-4 at the free-throw line in Chicago’s 124-117 win.

That performance set the stage for a bigger opportunity, and Bulls coach Tiago Splitter made it clear before Friday’s preseason game against the Memphis Grizzlies that Swain’s role is only going to grow. Splitter sees him as a player who can handle the ball and create for others, while keeping the assignment simple.

“Just to be aggressive, just be himself,” Splitter said to Gavin Dorsey of Bulls Roundtable. “I know it's a lot for him as a young guy.”

Splitter went a step further, saying Swain is on track to be a primary ball handler for the foreseeable future, per Joel Lorenzi of The Athletic.

“He's still getting used to that role, but I think in the future, I see him as a primary ball handler, creating for us,” Splitter said.

The opening has come with Tre Jones sidelined by left hip soreness, leaving Swain as the backup point guard behind Josh Giddey in a rotation that is already thin.

Chicago and Memphis were set to tip off at 7:00 pm CST/8:00 pm EST at the United Center.

Bulls Loss Came With 3 Signs Fans Should Be Watching Closely

The Bulls second preseason game offered a familiar kind of October loss, the 104-100 setback to Memphis, but it also gave a useful glimpse at a few players worth tracking once the games start counting. Norman Powell looked like the steady offensive presence the Bulls can lean on, Leonard Miller gave the bench a forward option with real impact, and Caleb Wilson showed enough scoring ability to suggest there is something there even if the early rhythm was uneven.

Powells value stood out in how comfortably he fit into the offense, while Millers minutes pointed to a player who can help stabilize second-unit stretches. Wilsons night was the most eye-catching because it took time to build, but the broader takeaway is the same for all three: preseason performances can be noisy, yet these are the kinds of signs that tend to matter when a roster is trying to sort out who can actually move the needle in the regular season. Matas Buzelis Exit Brings An Early Bulls Concern Into Focus

Matas Buzelis was forced out of the Bulls preseason game against the Grizzlies after injuring his right ankle, adding an unwelcome twist to a night that had already offered a glimpse of his growing role. He had played 12 minutes and scored 6 points before leaving, leaving Chicago with an early preseason health question involving one of its young pieces.

Buzelis had already briefly gone down earlier after a hard fall while going for a block, then returned before the ankle issue ended his night. For a Bulls team trying to sort out its rotation and keep its promising younger players on the floor, the only real concern now is how serious the injury is and what it means going forward. Bulls Face An Early Frontcourt Test They Really Didn't Need

The Bulls head into their second preseason game at the United Center already having to adjust their frontcourt plans. Head coach Tiago Splitter said Jalen Smith will miss the matchup with Memphis because of foot soreness, another setback for a group that was already missing Nic Claxton and Zach Collins.

With the traditional center rotation so limited, Chicago is expected to lean on small-ball looks against the Grizzlies. That leaves the Bulls trying to patch together their interior minutes with only Tobe Awaka and Orlando Robinson as their remaining true centers, a useful early test of depth even if it is not the one they wanted this soon.
