Bulls May Finally Get Frontcourt Help At A Crucial Time

As the Knicks grapple with a potential loss of Hart's dynamism, the Bulls look to Claxton's anticipated return for much-needed interior strength.

The Knicks may have to navigate Wednesday night without Josh Hart, while the Bulls are tracking Nic Claxton’s possible season debut as both teams head into their second meeting of the year with injury questions hanging over the matchup.

New York’s report lists Hart as questionable because of right ankle soreness. That puts his status in doubt for the 7:30 p.m. ET game at Madison Square Garden as the Knicks try to keep momentum rolling after Monday’s win over the Brooklyn Nets.

Hart has been a steady presence through all seven games so far, putting up 8.6 points, 7.3 rebounds, 3.9 assists and 2.1 steals while logging about 32 minutes a night. He backed that up Monday with eight points, six rebounds, seven assists and three steals in New York’s 103-90 victory, a performance that helped the Knicks move to 3-4.

His value goes well beyond the box score. The Knicks lean on Hart for rebounding, defense and playmaking, so any absence would leave a real hole in the rotation.

Chicago’s injury situation centers on Claxton, who is questionable with a left hamstring strain after being upgraded on Tuesday’s report. He has not played in a regular-season game for the Bulls yet, but a return would give them more size and help inside against a Knicks team that has already beaten them once this season.

The Bulls are also listing center Jalen Smith as probable with a left finger sprain, so Chicago’s frontcourt remains a key storyline heading into the game.

Claxton’s numbers from last season with the Brooklyn Nets show what he can bring if he’s cleared: 11.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.1 blocks in 69 games, with 68 starts and 27.8 minutes per contest while shooting 57.1% from the field.

Chicago comes in at 1-6 after dropping six of its first seven, including Monday’s 126-107 loss to the Philadelphia 76ers, led by LeBron James and Jaylen Brown. New York, meanwhile, is trying to string together back-to-back wins after taking the first matchup with the Bulls 133-127 last Wednesday.

Bulls Waste Caleb Wilsons Big Night As Early Slide Gets Worse

Caleb Wilson gave the Bulls a needed spark with 24 points, but it was not nearly enough to slow a Philadelphia team that has opened the season looking every bit like a contender. The 76ers rolled to a 126-107 win at Xfinity Mobile Arena, moving to 7-1 while Chicago dropped to 1-6 and absorbed its fifth straight loss.

Philadelphia took control in the third quarter, when the game tilted hard in a seven-minute stretch that left the Bulls chasing the rest of the night. Tyrese Maxey powered the offense with 26 points and 11 assists, Jaylen Brown added 25 points and 11 rebounds, and LeBron James chipped in 15 points and nine assists as Chicagos early slide kept getting worse. Caleb Wilson Gives Bulls Fans A Reason To Feel Different Right Now

Caleb Wilson is already giving Bulls fans something to latch onto in a season that has started rough, and now he has a little off-court spotlight to go with it. The rookie has appeared in his first professional commercial for New Balance, a spot that shows him knocking down jump shots while talking about his approach to basketball, a nice reminder that there is at least one young player in Chicago who looks comfortable carrying a bigger stage.

On the floor, Wilson has backed up the attention with production, averaging 21.6 points and 6.7 rebounds per game while shooting 43.2 percent from the field. The Bulls are just 1-6 as they get ready to face the Knicks, so every sign of progress matters, and Wilsons early run has been one of the few things around the team that feels worth building around right now. Bulls Suddenly Have Another Frontcourt Concern To Worry About

Jalen Smiths preseason has taken another turn, and not the kind the Bulls wanted to see. Already working through a left finger sprain that had him listed as probable, Smith went down with a left hand injury in the game against the Knicks and did not return, adding more uncertainty to a frontcourt group that has already been asked to absorb some early-season stress.

Chicago has been leaning on Smith to help cover for injured veteran center Nic Claxton, so any setback there matters beyond one exhibition game. The Bulls do not have much room for another frontcourt issue, and with Smiths status now in question, the team will be waiting to see what comes next before it can get a clearer read on its depth.
