MLB Insider Issues Alarming Cubs Injury Update

The Cubs' pitching staff may soon see a boost with Justin Steele's potential bullpen return, just as they face trade deadline decisions.

The Chicago Cubs are hunting for pitching help, and they may have a significant internal answer on the horizon.

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, left-hander Justin Steele is expected to begin throwing off a mound in the first week of August. Nightengale also reported that Cubs manager Craig Counsell said it would be too late in the season for Steele to get back into the rotation, but that he could be used out of the bullpen in September.

“Chicago Cubs ace Justin Steele, who hasn't pitched since April 7, 2025, is expected to start throwing off a mound the first week of August, but Cubs manager Craig Counsell said it will be too late in the season for him to rejoin the rotation and instead would be used in the bullpen in September,” Nightengale writes.

Steele has been on the injured list all year and has been working his way back from an elbow issue. The mound work in August marks a meaningful step in that process, even if a return to the majors still appears to be a September possibility.

That timing lines up with the MLB trade deadline on August 3, which leaves the Cubs still free to look outside the organization for help while also waiting on Steele’s progress. If he does make it back, even in a limited bullpen role, it would give Chicago another arm for the stretch run and, potentially, the postseason.

The 3.30 ERA All-Star left-hander has been out since April 7, 2025, but this latest update suggests he is moving closer to rejoining the club. For a Cubs pitching staff dealing with injuries and uneven production, that’s the kind of news they’ve been waiting to hear.

Why Cole Smith Matters More Than Blackhawks Fans Might Think

Cole Smiths move to Chicago on July 1 was easy to overlook in a busy offseason, but the Blackhawks clearly see more in the 30-year-old forward than a depth addition. After stops with the Predators and Golden Knights, Smith arrives with a little NHL mileage, a college hockey background at North Dakota and the kind of multi-sport upbringing that has helped shape a pro career built on versatility and persistence.

The three-year contract gives him something he has not had much of in his career: stability. It also signals that Chicago believes Smith can fill a need on a roster still being built out, with a role that goes beyond simply adding another name to the forward group. For a team trying to round out its identity, those are the kinds of signings that can matter more than they first appear. [Read more 🡒]

A Massive Goalie Rumor Could Shake Up The Blackhawks Offseason

With Connor Bedard sidelined, the Blackhawks are already leaning harder on their younger core, a reality that has made every offseason ripple around the roster feel a little bigger. Chicago has spent the spring and summer sorting through the kind of depth decisions that matter for a rebuilding club, from contract business to the kind of lineup stability that can help bridge the gap while its top talent gets healthy.

That is why the goaltending chatter is worth watching, even from a distance. Any movement at the position can reshape the market quickly, and if the speculation around Connor Hellebuyck keeps building, it could send a few teams scrambling to adjust their plans before the offseason settles into place. Blackhawks May Have Found The Blue-Line Weapon Fans Keep Waiting For

The Blackhawks have spent years looking for a blue-line player who can change a game with the puck, and Xavier Villenueve is suddenly the newest name to watch. Drafted in 2026, the 5-foot-11 offensive defenseman has drawn the kind of comparison that gets attention around the league, with his game drawing parallels to Montreals Lane Hutson because of the blend of size, mobility and skill.

Chicago is not rushing the process, either. Villenueve is headed to Boston University to add strength and round out the defensive side of his game, while the organization has made clear it likes the talent enough to bet on the long view. The question now is whether that upside eventually translates into the kind of offensive presence the Blackhawks have been seeking on the back end, especially with other young defensemen already in the system.
