The Chicago Blackhawks walk into one of the toughest buildings in the league Thursday night already short-handed, already scuffling, and already staring at a steep climb against a Tampa Bay Lightning team that hasn’t lost at home.
Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. Eastern at Benchmark International Arena, where the Lightning have opened 7-0-0. Chicago arrives at 4-11-1 after Wednesday’s 5-3 loss to the Florida Panthers, a defeat that extended its skid to four games and dropped the club to 0-6-1 on the road.
The Blackhawks’ task got harder before they even got to Tampa. Patrick Kane and Bowen Byram are both out, leaving Chicago without two important pieces as it tries to steady itself on the second night of a back-to-back.
Kane’s absence is the more immediate blow. He went down with an upper-body injury in Monday’s 5-2 loss to the Colorado Avalanche, left in the second period and never returned. Afterward, coach Jeff Blashill said the veteran forward “will miss the next couple of games, for sure.”
Kane did not travel with the team for the opening stretch of its three-game trip, and Chicago now has to replace a player who had given it some reliable offense in a rough start. In 15 games, he posted one goal and eight assists for nine points.
Those eight assists matched Connor Bedard’s total entering Thursday. Kane signed a two-year deal with Chicago during the offseason.
Byram has been sidelined even longer. He missed eight straight games before the trip began, and the Blackhawks placed him on injured reserve Tuesday, retroactive to October 15, 2026. That move doesn’t give a timeline for his return; he can come back once he’s medically cleared, but Chicago hasn’t said when that might be.
Blashill said earlier this week that Byram was seeing a specialist as he worked through the final stage of recovery. The team has continued to call it an upper-body injury without offering a more specific diagnosis.
Chicago acquired Byram from Buffalo in June, and he has played only six games for the Blackhawks. The club recalled forward Dillon Boucher from Rockford before the trip began.
Without Kane, Chicago’s offense leans even more heavily on its younger core. Bedard leads the team with 12 points, including four goals and eight assists.
Roman Kantserov has nine points and seven goals, while Anton Frondell has eight points and Tyler Bertuzzi has six. The Blackhawks need production from more than one line if they’re going to keep pace with Tampa Bay.
That’s a tall order against a Lightning team that keeps stacking wins while dealing with a major storyline of its own. Nikita Kucherov has requested a trade and told the organization he does not intend to sign another contract. The request became public last week, and general manager Julien BriseBois answered with a firm rejection of the idea of moving him.
“We unequivocally have no intention of trading Nikita,” BriseBois said.
Kucherov spoke Monday and framed the issue around the way negotiations were handled.
“It was never about the money for me,” Kucherov said. “It was more about poor communication and respect.”
He also said he remains committed to helping his teammates win while he stays with Tampa Bay. No trade has been announced, and he remains in the lineup.
The Lightning are still getting elite production from him. Through 14 games, Kucherov has 20 points, with four goals and 16 assists. He’s also playing the final season of an eight-year, $76 million contract, and his modified no-trade clause includes a list of 10 approved destinations.
Tampa Bay’s depth has been rolling alongside him. Brandon Hagel has eight goals and 16 points, Jake Guentzel has eight goals and six assists, and Brayden Point has five goals and 13 points. The Lightning are 9-3-2 overall and come in off a 4-2 win over Detroit, with a 6-2-2 record over their last 10.
The betting market reflects the gap between the teams. ESPN’s pregame listing had Tampa Bay at -395 on the moneyline Thursday morning, and that number can still move before puck drop.
This is the first of two meetings between the teams this season. The rematch is scheduled for March 8, 2027, in Chicago.
Chicago finishes the trip against Carolina on Saturday, November 7, 2026, before returning home to face Buffalo on Thursday, November 12, 2026. Tampa Bay’s next games are at Minnesota on Saturday and at Winnipeg on Sunday.

Blackhawks Suddenly Have A Troubling Bowen Byram Situation
Bowen Byram arrived in Chicago with plenty of expectation after the Blackhawks acquired him on June 23, then locked him up with a six-year extension on July 1. He opened preseason well enough to suggest he could be a meaningful part of the blue line right away, but the first stretch of the regular season has been far bumpier, with limited offense and a minus-7 rating raising some early questions about how quickly the fit was coming together.
Those on-ice concerns only got more complicated in mid-October, when Byram was ruled day-to-day with an upper-body injury and the messaging around his status started to drift. The Blackhawks now have a situation that goes beyond simple recovery time, because the teams handling of his availability has turned into a bigger storyline than anyone expected this early in the season. Blackhawks Road Problem Keeps Getting Harder To Ignore
The Blackhawks left Amerant Bank Arena with another reminder that the road has become a problem they cannot shake, falling 5-3 to the Panthers in a game Florida controlled from start to finish. Chicago did get a pair of goals from Frank Nazar, but the Panthers kept answering, with rookie Sandis Vilmanis driving the offense and Sam Reinhart sealing it with an empty-net goal late.
For a team trying to build any kind of early-season traction, the bigger concern is how quickly these away games are slipping away. Chicago has now dropped seven straight on the road to open the season, and the pattern is getting harder to dismiss as a one-off bad night. The Blackhawks will need more than a few flashes from their young talent if they want to stop the slide and make their next trip look different. [Read more 🡒]
Blackhawks New Look Is Already Sparking A Debate Fans Wont Ignore
The NHL and Fanatics rolled out the Hometown Remix jersey collection for all 32 teams, and Chicagos entry immediately stood out for reasons beyond the usual uniform reveal buzz. The Blackhawks new look takes a sharp turn from the familiar red, black and white palette, leaning into a green design tied to a historical color scheme and St. Patricks Day roots.
Not everyone is buying the concept, though, and the reaction has already turned into a familiar kind of jersey debate. Fans and media have been split on the departure from tradition, with the Blackhawks sweater drawing particularly harsh attention as one of the most talked-about designs in the collection.
