The Rockford IceHogs faced a tough loss against the San Diego Gulls, falling 5-4 in a thrilling showdown at the BMO Center on Saturday night.
The IceHogs wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, with Gavin Hayes leading the charge just 30 seconds into the game. Hayes slipped past the Gulls' goaltender Calle Clang with a slick move in the slot.
However, the Gulls responded quickly. At 5:46, Sasha Pastujov unleashed a power play rocket from the far circle, leveling the score at 1-1.
Rockford took control later in the first period with two consecutive goals. Jake Furlong, riding the momentum from his previous game, fired a wrist shot from the high slot to make it 2-1. Hayes was on fire, grabbing his second goal of the period with just over two minutes left, thanks to a precise pass from Brett Seney at the near post.
The Gulls weren't backing down. In the dying moments of the first, they capitalized on a power play. Captain Ryan Carpenter was in the right place at the right time, deflecting the puck into the net from close range, narrowing the IceHogs' lead to 3-2.
The second period saw the Gulls claw back to even ground. Stian Solberg's shot from the far corner found its way past Rockford's goalie Drew Commesso, tying the game at 3-3.
The third period was a rollercoaster. Hayes completed his first professional hat trick at 5:21, picking up a loose puck near the blue paint and giving Rockford a 4-3 lead.
But the Gulls had other plans. Pastujov struck again on the power play from the far dot, making it 4-4.
With just 7:30 left in regulation, Solberg stepped up once more, delivering the decisive blow. His shot soared past Commesso, securing a 5-4 victory for the Gulls.
This matchup was a testament to the back-and-forth nature of hockey, with both teams showcasing their offensive prowess. Despite the loss, Hayes' standout performance was a highlight for Rockford, hinting at a promising future for the young player.
