Blackhawks Suddenly Have A Bigger Bowen Byram Concern Than One Missed Game

As the Blackhawks navigate a challenging season start, defenseman Bowen Byram is sidelined temporarily, prompting lineup adjustments and strategic recalibrations.

Chicago’s blue line will be short a key piece Thursday night, with Bowen Byram ruled out against the Winnipeg Jets because of an upper-body injury.

Blackhawks head coach Jeff Blashill told reporters that Byram is considered day-to-day and will not dress for the game. Blashill did not say exactly what caused the injury, though Byram was struck by a shot in Tuesday’s 5-3 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins.

Byram still managed to log 24:37 in that game and picked up his first point with Chicago in the process.

With Byram unavailable, Ethan Del Mastro is expected to step into the lineup. Teuvo Teravainen also took reps on the power play during morning skate.

The absence will be just the second game Byram has missed this season. His other setback came when he left the team before his expected return against the Buffalo Sabres on Oct. 3 to be present for the birth of his twin girls.

Through the early part of the 2026-27 season, Byram has one assist, a minus-7 rating and an average ice time of 24:42.

It has been a rocky opening stretch for the 25-year-old in his first year with the Hawks. Chicago landed him in June in a trade with the Sabres that also brought in Jordan Greenway, then signed him to a six-year extension worth $12.5 million per year beginning in the 2027-28 season. But the results haven’t followed, as Chicago has won only two of its first seven games.

Anton Frondell Is Giving Blackhawks Fans A New Calder Storyline

Anton Frondell has quickly turned into one of the more interesting early-season stories around the Blackhawks, and not just because he has jumped out front among the teams rookies in points and assists. Working mainly as the second-line center, he has looked comfortable in a role that asks for far more than offense, handling faceoffs well and showing enough defensive awareness to stay on the ice in important moments.

Jeff Blashills willingness to lean on Frondell has been just as notable as the production itself, with the rookie earning steady ice time and even penalty kill duties. For a Chicago team always searching for young players who can be trusted in all situations, Frondell is already giving the organization a Calder storyline worth following, and he may be building toward something bigger if this start keeps holding up. Connor Bedard's Return Gave Blackhawks Fans A Reason To Believe

Connor Bedards return gave the Blackhawks a welcome lift on a night when they needed one, and the offense finally looked like it had some life in a 5-3 win over the Penguins. Roman Kantserov and Teuvo Teravainen each scored twice, giving Chicago the kind of finishing it has been searching for through the early part of the season, and the victory moved the club to 2-5-0.

Bedard also got on the board for the first time this season, a small but meaningful step after his return to the lineup. For a team still trying to steady itself, the combination of Bedards presence and a balanced scoring effort was enough to leave the building with something more than just two points. [Read more 🡒]
