Blackhawks Stunned By Predators In Overtime After Grzelcyk Injury Shakes Lineup

The Blackhawks' hopes dimmed as a critical injury to Matt Grzelcyk and an overtime defeat to the Predators highlight their ongoing struggle to close out pivotal games.

The Chicago Blackhawks faced off against the Nashville Predators in an exciting matinee matchup at the United Center on Saturday. Coming off a tough loss to the Colorado Avalanche, the Blackhawks were eager to bounce back and potentially play spoiler against their Central Division rivals.

The first period was a stalemate, with neither team managing to light the lamp. However, the big talking point was Matt Grzelcyk's injury, which sidelined him for the rest of the game.

In the second period, Nick Lardis stepped up for the Blackhawks, netting his sixth goal of the season. Given the chance to start in the top six, Lardis made the most of the opportunity and rewarded the coaching staff's confidence.

But Nashville wasn't going to let that lead stand for long. Just over two minutes later, Filip Forsberg tied it up with his 31st goal of the season, showing why he's a key player for the Predators.

Connor Bedard then gave the Blackhawks a 2-1 edge heading into the second intermission. On a breakaway, he executed a dazzling move to beat Juuse Saros, marking his 29th goal of the season.

The third period saw Steven Stamkos bring Nashville level once more. Despite having chances to close out the game, the Blackhawks couldn't maintain their lead, pushing the contest into overtime.

In the extra frame, Filip Forsberg capitalized on a mistake behind the Blackhawks' net. After stealing the puck from Andre Burakovsky, Forsberg made a slick play to beat Spencer Knight, securing the win for Nashville with his second goal of the game.

Post-game, coach Jeff Blashill confirmed that Matt Grzelcyk will miss the upcoming four-game road trip on the East Coast, with his return date still uncertain.

While March has largely been positive for the young Blackhawks, closing out games remains a challenge. Addressing this will be crucial as they prepare for the 2026-27 season.

Looking ahead, the Blackhawks will hit the road to face the New York Islanders on Tuesday night, kicking off their four-game road trip.
