Kyle Davidson’s 2023 NHL Draft keeps looking better every time someone takes a fresh pass at it.
That class already gave the Blackhawks Connor Bedard with the No. 1 pick, and it also delivered Oliver Moore, Roman Kantserov and Nick Lardis later on. In a recent 2023 NHL re-draft by The Athletic’s Scott Wheeler, all four of those Chicago picks landed inside the top 20. For a rebuild built around draft capital, that’s the kind of haul that changes the conversation fast.
The Blackhawks’ newest crop is starting to get its own spotlight, too. Ryan Roobroeck, Chicago’s 2026 second-round pick, is in Windsor, Ontario, for the World Junior Summer Showcase. Team Canada opens later this evening against Sweden, and Roobroeck spoke about what he’s been doing since the Blackhawks drafted him earlier this summer and how eager he is to show what he can do this week.
Chicago was supposed to have two players in that event representing Canada, but that changed earlier this week when defenseman Xavier Villeneuve was ruled out. The details of Villeneuve’s situation were also laid out.
There’s also an early look at how Patrick Kane could fit into the forward group on opening night, even without Connor Bedard in the lineup. The Blackhawks aren’t expected to make any more additions to the roster this offseason, especially up front, so the current picture may be the one they carry into the season.
One longtime Blackhawks voice is also moving on. Eddie Olczyk announced that he is stepping away from his role as Seattle Kraken TV color analyst and will now only work national games on TNT.
He said he wants to spend more time at home with his family in Chicago. The Kraken thanked him for his work and passion over the past four years, and the move marks a major shift for a broadcaster who has been tied to the Blackhawks for so long.
Around the league, there’s movement on a few fronts. TSN reported that Minnesota Wild GM Bill Guerin is expected to meet with Quinn Hughes in Michigan this week in an effort to work out a new contract. That comes after former Blackhawks captain and Wild forward Nick Foligno made a pitch for Hughes to sign an extension with Minnesota.
Sportsnet’s Sonny Sachdeva also ranked the NHL’s best core groups of players under 25, with the Blackhawks earning an honorable mention.
Elsewhere, the free-agent market keeps thinning out, though Daily Faceoff still lists names like Vladimir Tarasenko, Logan Stanley and Patrik Laine among the players still available.
And in trade chatter, Jeremy Rutherford reported that the St. Louis Blues have shown interest in Carolina Hurricanes defenseman Alexander Nikishin. Nikishin remains one of only 10 NHL restricted free agents without a new contract, and he has also been part of summer trade rumors.
A few other teams have their own questions to sort through. Boston Hockey Now noted that the Bruins have a limited window to maximize an extension for Fraser Minten, whose entry-level deal runs through the end of the 2026-27 season after a breakout year that included 17 goals and 18 assists for 25 points.
Detroit Hockey Now examined the uncertainty in Detroit after the Red Wings parted ways with Steve Yzerman. Philly Hockey Now continued its prospect rankings with Porter Martone at No. 1 for the Flyers.
And New Jersey Hockey Now reported that Devils GM Sunny Mehta believes his blue line will look much better this season, especially with Luke Hughes back healthy.
