Blackhawks Could Get Pulled Into A Pricey Young Winger Chase

Trade talks intensify as the Capitals seek a new home for winger Ivan Miroshnichenko, drawing interest from several NHL teams including the Blackhawks and Canucks.

The trade chatter around Ivan Miroshnichenko is growing, and the Washington Capitals appear to have multiple teams circling.

According to the reporting, Capitals general manager Chris Patrick is believed to be talking with several clubs as Washington looks to move the winger, with Dan Milstein, Miroshnichenko’s agent, also speaking to teams in an effort to help get a deal done. Among the teams mentioned are the Chicago Blackhawks and Vancouver Canucks.

On Wednesday’s “ DFO Insider ” program with Jeff Marek and David Pagnotta, the discussion centered on just how far this has gone, and whether the player himself has now pushed for a change of scenery.

“Bluntly, there’s no spot for him in Washington. I mean, on the one hand, it’s like, 'oh, it stinks.

You can’t get someone like Ivan to go in.' On the other hand, that forward group is so stacked,” Marek explained.

Miroshnichenko, 22, is in the first season of a two-year deal carrying an AAV of $925,000, and interest in him appears to stretch well beyond one market. Pagnotta said the strongest buzz is coming from western teams.

“A lot of teams out west, a lot of teams in the Pacific,” Pagnotta said.

He also said the Philadelphia Flyers have checked in, though he doesn’t see a match there, and added that Washington would prefer to keep him out of the East if possible.

“The Philadelphia Flyers have checked in on him, but I don’t think there’s a fit there. I think Washington, to your point, wants him out of the East, especially out of the division.

I think a few other Eastern teams have checked in as well. But Vancouver, Seattle, L.A., Calgary, I think among the teams that are poking around on him to try to see if they can make something work.”

Pagnotta later included the Blackhawks among the teams pursuing him.

The exact stage of the negotiations isn’t clear, but Marek said the asking price is “at least a first-round pick.”

Miroshnichenko has one goal in three games with the Capitals this season. Over 55 NHL regular-season games, he has six goals and eight assists for 14 points.

Blackhawks Blue Line Suddenly Faces A Problem Ahead Of Road Trip

A road trip can expose a thin blue line in a hurry, and the Blackhawks are suddenly staring at that possibility with two of their left-shot defensemen in question. Head coach Jeff Blashill said Alex Vlasic is ill and questionable for Thursday against the Detroit Red Wings, a development that comes after he missed the morning skate and leaves Chicago juggling its back end before the trip really gets rolling.

Bowen Byrams situation only adds to the uncertainty. He remains sidelined with an upper-body injury and is also uncertain for the next game against the Boston Bruins, leaving the Blackhawks without much clarity on how their defense will look in the near term. For a team trying to get through a stretch on the road, the timing is far from ideal. [Read more 🡒]

Blackhawks Have An Early Problem Kyle Davidson May Need To Fix

Through the first 12 games, the Blackhawks have looked like a team that can skate, but not always one that can consistently make life difficult on opponents. The numbers behind that impression are stark enough to raise an early concern: Chicago sits near the bottom of the league in both hits and blocked shots, a sign that the roster still lacks some of the grit and edge that tends to travel well over an 82-game season.

For a team trying to build a tougher identity without blowing up its plans, that leaves Kyle Davidson with a familiar kind of balancing act. The Blackhawks can hope for more bite from the players already in the room, but the article also points to possible outside help in Paul Cotter and Nick Seeler, two names that could add some needed physicality without forcing a major investment. Blackhawks Trade Rumors Suddenly Put Young Core In The Spotlight

The Blackhawks have found themselves back in the middle of the rumor mill, with multiple NHL teams reportedly scouting their games as trade season chatter picks up. Chicago is said to be exploring ways to add more scoring punch up front, a sign that the front office is at least weighing options as it looks to keep building around a young roster that has already drawn plenty of attention around the league.

What makes the speculation so interesting is the caliber of the names being floated in discussions. Frank Nazar, Oliver Moore, Teuvo Teravainen and Kevin Korchinski have all been mentioned in the mix, which tells you the Blackhawks are not being viewed as a team with only fringe pieces to move. For now, though, it remains all talk, with no official trades on the books and plenty still unresolved about how aggressive Chicago plans to be. [Read more 🡒]
