Anton Frondell Gave Blackhawks Fans A Glimpse Of Whats Coming

Anton Frondell's standout performance in Buffalo highlights his promising potential in a challenging match for the Blackhawks.

The Chicago Blackhawks left Buffalo with another loss, but Anton Frondell gave them something to take from the night.

Chicago fell 4-3 to the Sabres on Saturday, wrapping up an 0-3-0 road trip. The effort was a little better than what the Blackhawks had shown earlier in the trip, but the result fit the same frustrating pattern: another game where the play simply wasn’t good enough.

Still, there were a couple of encouraging individual performances buried inside the defeat. Alex Vlasic was one of them.

With Bowen Byram unavailable after leaving to attend a family matter, Vlasic skated without his usual partner and responded with a much sharper showing in his own zone. He was noticeably better defensively than the rest of Chicago’s blue line and also picked up two assists.

One came on a sharp centering feed to Ryan Donato, a play that showed Vlasic can still create when the chance opens up.

It was the kind of outing he can build on, even if the loss kept the night from feeling satisfying on any level.

Frondell’s performance was even more eye-catching. The Blackhawks forward also finished with two assists, and both came on prime scoring chances. He set up Tyler Bertuzzi on a tic-tac-toe goal with a beautiful pass, then later found Oliver Moore with a pass back that came on what was the go-ahead goal at the time.

For Chicago, that’s the kind of flash they drafted him for. Vlasic is already an important two-way defender with a contract and term attached to him.

Frondell, though, was taken third overall because the Blackhawks believe he can become one of the faces of the franchise. On this night, he looked the part.

Afterward, Frondell wasn’t interested in dressing up the outing.

"It's hard to say after a loss," Frondell said about his personal game. He went on to credit the fact that he and Teravainen were able to make some nice plays, but it wasn't good enough in his mind.

He was even more direct when talking about the result.

"It's boring to lose games," Frondell said. "That's not what we want to do. But I think today showed that we can play better as a team."

That’s the balancing act with a young player like Frondell. The Blackhawks want more nights like this from him, because they drafted him to be elite.

They also know it won’t happen all at once. There will be more games with real flashes, and there will be growing pains too.

The next step is stringing those good nights together until they stop feeling like exceptions. For Frondell, that process is underway as he heads into his first full season.

Blackhawks Face An Early Test In Their Push Toward 90 Points

The Blackhawks spent the offseason trying to change the look of the roster, adding Bowen Byram, bringing Patrick Kane back into the mix and locking in Connor Bedard on a contract extension. It was the kind of summer that gave the organization a more ambitious tone, especially with expectations building around a push toward 90 points and a step forward in the standings.

For now, though, the early challenge is doing enough offense without Bedard, who remains sidelined after offseason shoulder surgery. Tyler Yaremchuk and Carter Hutton recently weighed in on the Blackhawks chances to hit that benchmark, and the discussion naturally turned to where the next wave of production might come from. Hutton also flagged Spencer Knight as a player who could tilt the season one way or the other, which is the sort of swing factor Chicago cannot afford to overlook. [Read more 🡒]

Former Blackhawks Enforcer Remembered For A Rugged NHL Career

Lyle Odeleins name still carries weight for anyone who appreciated old-school NHL grit, even beyond the teams he skated for. The former defenseman built a 16-season career on toughness and reliability, becoming one of the leagues more recognizable rugged blueliners while helping the Canadiens win the Stanley Cup in 1993.

Odelein also spent part of his career with Chicago, fitting the kind of hard-edged style that Blackhawks fans have long respected. Over 1,056 games, he put up 50 goals and 252 points, but the number that best captures his reputation is the one tied to his physical presence, a total that underscored just how hard he played every night. Sabres Just Beat A Team Still Hiding A Problem That Matters

The Blackhawks are back home still looking for their first win after opening the season with three straight road losses, the latest a 4-3 defeat in Buffalo. Beyond the standings hole, the early concern has been the blue line, where head coach Jeff Blashill has been sorting through young defensemen Kevin Korchinski and Ethan Del Mastro while dealing with a roster that has already been hit by injuries and other absences.

Korchinski, who recently signed a two-year contract, has gotten a real opportunity with the lineup shifting around him, and Blashill has been watching how he handles it. Chicago is also waiting on Andrew Mangiapane to get healthy and on Connor Bedards recovery from shoulder surgery, with the next stretch at home against the Blues and Hurricanes offering a chance to settle things down before the calendar turns deeper into November.
